The maximum hiring rate for this position is $57,177. This posting is for a Transportation Worker III in the Union County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State maintained roads. Must be able to supervise and train others in equipment operation as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew. Work includes setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing right of way debris and hazards, assisting with pipe installation and operating a variety of hand and power tools. Work also includes the operation of various equipment as needed on different crews that includes, but is not limited to, an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe. Work involves shoveling, raking, sweeping, and walking and standing for long periods of time. Workers in these positions will be exposed to all types of weather conditions, and steep and uneven terrain. These positions respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled night work. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. These positions are also subject to out-of-town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Qualified applicants must submit an application that CLEARLY reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: + Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices + Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching + Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations; as well as, directing the daily activities of a work crew + Experience in snow and ice removal operations + Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper

Additional Expectations:

Employee in this position must have working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which it is assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by Supervisor. Ability to withstand extreme weather and terrain conditions while performing duties. Employee must have the ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. Ability to work in close proximity of high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Must have ability to safely and repeatedly lift and carry 50 lbs.

Safety toe shoes are required. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
