Job Description The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department (PRCR) mission is “Together we connect and enrich our community through exceptional experiences.” The PRCR Department plays a leading role in the quality of life and character of the Capital City. With nearly 10,000 acres of land, 220 parks, and 120 miles of greenway trails, the Department provides a wide range of facilities, amenities, and programs that support the social, cultural, mental and physical well-being of citizens. The Department is guided by a comprehensive 20-year System Plan that identifies the overall vision of Bringing People to Parks and Parks to People. This position will work as part of a team to maintain the landscape and grounds along Raleigh’s greenway trail system. Work Hours:

This position works Monday

  • Friday; 6:00 am
  • 2:30 pm during the summertime.

Duties and Responsibilities Maintains a variety of trail landscapes by mowing, edging, trimming, mulching, and leaf removal
Will assist crew installs watering plants, pruning trees and shrubs
Safely operates and maintains machinery, including out-front and zero-turn mower, tractor, string trimmer, edger, and backpack blower
Performs preventative equipment maintenance, including replacing worn or damaged parts, sharpening blades, and greasing machinery
Assist Gardener as their assistant, spraying pesticides, bed preparation, landscape installations, and removal of invasive plants
Occasionally perform repair work and preventative maintenance on and installation of tables, benches, fences, signs, etc.
Assists the city in cleanup and repair during inclement weather situations
May require working extended hours and weekends during storm events

Typical Qualifications Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED and one year of maintenance or customer service experience related to assignment OR An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation. Licensing/Certifications Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

Additional Information Knowledge of:

Standard practices, methods and materials of assigned work
Routine maintenance on equipment, including replacing parts, sharpening blades, and greasing machinery
Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices
Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to provide excellent customer service and maintain a positive public image Skill in: Operating various park maintenance machinery such as Zero-Turn mowers, tractors, string trimmers, edgers, and backpack blowers
Collaborating effectively with a team, including maintenance workers, supervisors, and volunteers, to achieve shared goals
Committing to safety protocols and attending required safety training to ensure a safe work environment
Performing manual tasks such as mowing, trimming, weeding, and lifting, as well as handling outdoor work in various weather conditions”
Following directions and meeting standards
Performing routine inspections to ensure safe operating conditions

ADA and Other Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work:

Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
