Job Description The City of Raleigh is seeking a Special Operations Maintenance Worker. Joining our Transportation Maintenance Division will provide an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in the maintenance of critical infrastructure such as sidewalks, curb and gutter, asphalt, and storm drains. As a member of our 218 person staff, you will contribute to maintenance of 1,130 miles of streets and sidewalks; the upkeep of over 33,000 curb ramps; and the protection of 3.2 million linear feet of stormwater pipes connecting more than 32,000 drainage inlets.
Within the Special Operations Unit you will be part of a team responsible for assisting with nuisance abatements, graffiti removal, street cleaning, leaf collection, and snow and ice cleanup. As a member of our team, in addition to your salary, you can expect:

Duties and Responsibilities Performs unskilled or semi-skilled general maintenance and/or waste services work in support of City department(s) or maintenance function; selects proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks; performs work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations
Monitors basic facility electrical, mechanical and/or structural/grounds repair and/or maintenance needs; performs unskilled or semiskilled preventative maintenance, cleaning and/or repairs; secures and opens facilities; removes and hauls debris and/or refuse; performs set up of furniture, equipment and/or event spaces; maintains grounds and landscape; and/or performs asphalt and other related repairs
Inspects and maintains tools and equipment by changing out worn or damaged parts, monitoring safe operational use, and/or cleaning equipment; inspects facilities and structures; identifies and documents required repairs
Responds to customer requests and addresses issues or maintenance needs; reviews operational issues and/or parts requirements; performs basic troubleshooting of equipment issues which may include HVAC, electrical and/or plumbing
Monitors and reviews inventory and materials needs; requests inventory based on requirements; may work with contract workers by scheduling and coordinating repairs and maintenance work
Maintains activity logs, records, work orders and related reports
May be required to work extended hours and/or weekends depending on volume of workload

Typical Qualifications Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED and one year of maintenance or customer service experience related to assignment OR An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:

Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
