Water Maintenance Worker needed for the Village of Herkimer in Herkimer, NY.Pay rate is $22.30 hourly based on experience.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Performs semi-skilled and skilled duties in the operation of a water distribution system. Cleans repairs and maintains wastewater plant equipment; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

• Reads, removes and resets water meters in the homes of consumers
• Assists in laying mains and installing hydrants and valves
• Assists in making taps on street water for service to consumers
• Makes adjustments and repairs to such fixtures as hydrants, valves, mains, pumps and motors, including electronic telemetry equipment, high output pumps and pressure activated flow equipment
• investigates customer service requests
• Maintains meter records
• Repairs and tests meters
• Opens and closes water services as directed
• Maintains inventories of meters and supplies necessary for operation
• Operates a motor vehicle
• Assists in emergency call outs, when requested
• Assists in the operation of pumps, motors, compressors and other wastewater plant machinery and equipment
• Adjusts and regulates pump operations according to the needs of various jobs
• Operates a centrifuge for mixing chemicals and disposing of sludge cake as needed
• Lubricates and maintains motors and pumps
• Change pulley belts, couplings and impellers
• Operates dump truck and performs minor maintenance and repairs on motor vehicles
• Operates a hydraulic wastewater cleaner and manually clears debris from catch basins and manholes
• Carries out a variety of cleaning and custodial tasks on plan buildings and grounds.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Good knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and principles of the work; mechanical aptitude; skill in the operation and repair of pumps, valves and related mechanical electrical equipment; ability to understand and emergencies; ability to make simple calculations; operation and maintenance of pumps and motors and other wastewater plant machinery and equipment; good knowledge of the use of basic hand and power tools related to the work; working knowledge of wastewater plant operation; working knowledge of electrical wiring and circuitry; ability to work from diagrams, plans and rough sketches; ability to perform heavy manual labor; ability to operate motor equipment; ability to record figures accurately and to submit legible written records; courtesy and tact in dealing with the public; mechanical aptitude; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

ACCEPTABLE TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school or possession of a New York State high school equivalency diploma and one year of experience as a plumbers helper or water maintenance workers helper or mechanic in the repair of small part mechanisms, pumps or motors; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Eligibility for an appropriate level New York State drivers license at the time of application for appointment. Possession of license at time of appointment.
