Overview The Church Steward at John Wesley United Methodist Church is responsible for the maintenance of all church properties, ensuring their safety, operability, aesthetic appeal for visitors, and fostering a conducive working environment for all church staff. The purpose of this role is to advance the Church’s mission to make disciples who love Christ through creating hospitable spaces where people feel welcome. The Church Steward should be committed to Christ and a spiritually healthy lifestyle. They will ensure that each space is safe, clean, and well-maintained. All church facilities are designed to help people engage with our church and grow in their relationship with Christ. The Church Steward role requires a substantial amount of physical activity and experience with minor maintenance repairs. They will also aid in event preparations and coordination, church-wide logistics, project management and space set-up. They will be expected to work with and train volunteers to assist with managing our facilities. The Church Steward needs to be able to work and coordinate with a team of contractors to assist the church when expertise exceeds their own. They will need to collaborate/partner with staff and church members. Must be pleasant to all parties, eager to complete work and a team player.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare building for weekend church services and other church events in coordination with ministry leads, staff and volunteers.
  • Perform the maintenance and upkeep of all church facilities (buildings and grounds) ensuring the spaces are clean, safe, and well maintained.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for all outside vendor maintenance contracts. This includes meeting with vendors, scheduling spaces, reviewing invoices, and ensuring all spaces are functioning properly.
  • Work closely with the Financial Administrator on financial aspects of facilities including close coordination of any leases and invoices and billing.
  • Work closely with custodial staff and contractors (cleaners, landscapers, repair persons) to maintain facilities.
  • Maintain inventory of tools and resources needed for upkeep.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies ensuring availability and timely replenishment.
  • Execute maintenance tasks for key systems such as security, HVAC, and electrical.
  • Coordinate with ministry leads, staff and volunteers to prepare and organize spaces for both internal and external events.
  • Prepare spaces for events, ensuring optimal utilization, efficiency and cleanliness.
  • Setup and teardown tables and chairs in accordance with a set-up diagram.
  • See to the care and proper usage of all facilities and physical assets such as signage, stands, chairs and tables, and additional property and equipment, ensuring assets are properly maintained and stored after each event.
Qualifications:

  • Basic computer skills (texting, emailing, electronic forms)
  • Previous experience in a similar role is preferred but not required; we value a willingness to learn.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent time management skills with the capability to prioritize tasks efficiently.
  • Physical stamina to stand for long periods, lift heavy items, and perform repetitive tasks.
  • A positive attitude and strong communication skills are essential for success in this role.

  • Minimum of a high school diploma (college a plus)
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in facilities upkeep
  • Physically able to handle cleaning, lifting, climb ladders, etc.
  • Able to work outdoors and well as indoors
  • Able to represent the church in a manner consistent with its values and mission
  • Must have own transportation
