Job Summary:
The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and upkeep of the zoo’s facilities, ensuring all buildings, exhibits, grounds, and mechanical systems are safe, functional, and well-maintained. This role includes leading a team of maintenance staff, coordinating repair and improvement projects, and working closely with other departments to support animal care, guest experience, and safety. The Maintenance Supervisor plays a key role in training and guiding the maintenance staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth. This position requires strong technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and the ability to effectively coach and empower team members to uphold the highest maintenance standards. The incumbent will report directly to the Maintenance Manager.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervise and schedule daily tasks for maintenance staff including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, trash and debris removal, painting, and general repairs. Perform routine inspections of animal enclosures, public areas, and behind-the-scenes spaces to ensure safety and cleanliness. Coordinate and oversee preventative maintenance for zoo infrastructure, systems, and equipment. Respond to urgent repair needs promptly, including after-hours emergencies when necessary. Ensure all maintenance activities are in compliance with ZAA, USDA, OSHA, and other relevant regulatory standards. Manage inventory of tools, materials, and equipment; order supplies as needed. Assist in the planning and execution of capital improvement and construction projects. Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs. Collaborate with animal care staff to minimize disruption during maintenance near sensitive animals. Train, mentor, and evaluate performance of maintenance team members. Other duties not listed as assigned.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required; technical certifications or vocational training preferred. Minimum 3-5 years of experience in facilities maintenance, with at least 1 year in a supervisory or leadership role. Strong working knowledge of building systems, tools, and maintenance practices. Strong technical expertise in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical systems, with the ability to troubleshoot and perform repairs. Proven leadership and training skills to mentor and develop maintenance staff effectively. Excellent customer service and communication abilities, ensuring a high-quality customer experience. Strong organizational, multitasking, and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Suite. Flexibility to work on-call, weekends, and holidays, with adherence to OSHA, ZAA and regulatory standards. Experience working in a zoological, park, or similar setting is a plus. Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical documents. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and communication skills. Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions and lift/move heavy objects. Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required.
Working Conditions:
Work may involve exposure to loud noises, heights, animal areas, and occasional contact with hazardous materials. Flexible schedule required, including weekends, holidays, and occasional on-call shifts. Required to work outdoors in extreme temperatures.
Physical Requirements:
