Exempt Job Goal :

To provide excellent vehicle maintenance services for all Baldwin County School System buses and other vehicles to ensure safe and efficient transportation for students and employees. To assist transportation personnel in the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of transportation problems or unsafe conditions. To assist with the effective management of school system vehicles, fiscal and material resources, and transportation personnel.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Maintain a current Department of Transportation (DOT) physical as required by Board Policy. Possess and maintain a valid Alabama bus driver certificate and commercial driver’s license (CDL). Ability to obtain Alabama School Bus Mechanic certification. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457. Possess and maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record including no DUI convictions. Possess successful drug screening results and be subject to and pass subsequent drug screening tests. Competent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to demonstrate leadership, supervision, and decision-making skills. Ability to operate and maintain needed tools and diagnostic equipment. Ability to diagnose mechanical problems, to implement preventive maintenance programs, and to follow safety and recommended rules for efficient shop operations. Physical strength and agility to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to exert up to 75 pounds of force. Ability, agility and stamina to engage in prolonged sitting or standing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning and reaching. Ability and willingness to work indoors and outdoors year-round in noisy, crowded environments, and inclement weather. Ability and willingness to work after hours, weekends, or holidays when necessary. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance. Such alternatives qualifications as listed as the Board may require.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions :

Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities. Monitors monthly safety inspection on buses as required by the State of Alabama. Assigns schedules and supervises work of mechanics, tire technicians, body technicians, parts technicians, transportation assistants, and other assigned transportation personnel. Evaluates performance of transportation shop personnel as assigned. Supervises maintenance on all vehicles and equipment owned by the Baldwin County Board of Education. Coordinates warranty issues as needed for all vehicles owned by the Baldwin County Board of Education. Supervises the organization of maintenance records for all vehicles owned by the school system. Investigates all accidents involving Baldwin County Board of Education vehicles and subsequent claims and reports resulting from accidents. Purchases parts and equipment for the repair of buses, vehicles, and lawn equipment owned by the school system. Assists with fiscal management and inventory control of parts, equipment, tires, materials, supplies, fuel, and oil purchased and used by the Transportation Department. Places new buses in position in the fleet. Ensures that shop areas, service bays, and parts storage areas are maintained in a clean, neat and safe manner. Develops bid specifications for items used in maintaining the bus fleet. Assists with or schedules training of designated transportation shop personnel. Performs road call duty as needed. Responds promptly to call out in emergency situations. Engages in training to upgrade mechanical knowledge and skills by attending workshops and seminars. Prioritizes work and monitors the work performance of assigned personnel. Performs duties in a courteous, professional manner. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility. Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel. Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner. Properly uses and cares for tools, equipment, and material resources of the school system. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

Terms of Employment:

Twelve-month position in accordance with the Board’s salary schedule
