GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Provides staff and the public with safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient places in which to engage in business or recreation.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
- Assists in assigning and monitoring tasks for Senior Custodians and Custodians.
- Assists in the training of department staff in proper methods and procedures (i.e., safety, use of equipment, cleaning techniques, preventive maintenance, handling of chemicals and toxic agents).
- Performs preventive maintenance on facility equipment.
- Uses electrical cleaning equipment in the maintenance of assigned facility (i.e., vacuum cleaners, shampoo machines, high-speed buffers).
- Uses appropriate chemicals and cleaners in a safe and productive manner.
- Monitors the condition of carpeting in all assigned facilities; assists in scheduling routine appointments for cleaning.
- Performs routine maintenance on custodial equipment, such as changing vacuum cleaner belts and bags.
- Assists supervisor with routine administrative paperwork.
- Maintains general records (i.e., daily work orders, tasks completed, supplies and materials used, etc.).
- Monitors inventory supply levels and orders supplies as needed.
- Reports equipment malfunctions and facility maintenance needs to immediate supervisor.
- Sweeps sidewalks and doorways; empties ashtrays and urns; removes weeds located near doorways; moves furniture and other equipment in the performance of duties; assists with ground maintenance and landscaping tasks; assumes duties of assigned staff upon their absence.
- Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, and Experience:
High school diploma or GED supplemented by six (6) months of experience in performing custodial tasks, preferably in a commercial or similar institutional environment; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Licenses and/or
Certifications:
Requires a valid driver license.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to operate a variety of hand-held and electrical equipment and tools including vacuum cleaners, strippers, and waxers. Must be able to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Must be able to perform manual tasks and remain on feet for extended periods of time. Tasks include considerable bending, stooping, climbing, etc., and working in confined spaces. Requires full range of body motion in manipulation of limbs and torso. Required to work from ladders and personnel-lifts for extended periods of time to complete certain tasks (i.e., cleaning windows and vents; changing light bulbs, etc.). Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work.
