Job Description

ROADS AND INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGER

Seven Islands Land Company manages the Pingree Family timberlands and manufacturing assets in northern and western Maine. Responsibilities:
Road Strategy Development:
  • Lead the creation and periodic revision of a comprehensive, long-term road infrastructure strategy for the timberlands, incorporating financial, operational, and sustainability goals.
  • Assess current road and infrastructure conditions, identifying areas for improvement, upgrades, and long-term investment.
  • Develop an on-the-ground implementation plan with a timeline and performance metrics.
Budget Oversight & Cost Management:
  • Manage the companywide road budget, tracking expenditures across units and districts, and ensuring spending aligns with strategic, budgetary, and forecasting requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Acadian and Highlands Unit teams on budgeting, cost tracking, material purchases, and contractor negotiations.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance operational efficiency and cost predictability, including optimizing contractor rates, improving material utilization, and leveraging available funding opportunities through grants or other financing options.
  • Continuously analyze spending patterns to better predict and stabilize annual road maintenance and improvement costs. Road Construction & Maintenance (Collaborative Leadership and Support):
  • Set company-wide standards and expectations for road construction, upgrades, and maintenance across all units, collaborating closely with foresters and resource managers to align practices.
  • Serve as a mentor and resource for foresters, providing guidance on best practices while empowering them to manage road maintenance within their areas.
  • Develop and maintain annual road plans in partnership with the Planning Manager and Resource Managers, ensuring road construction and maintenance schedules align with seasonal harvesting and forest management activities.
  • Establish a system for monitoring road conditions, maintenance schedules, and performance standards, ensuring consistent quality and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Promote a proactive, team-oriented approach by working alongside foresters and resource managers when needed, acting as a player-coach to support their efforts and ensure goals are met.
Infrastructure Oversight:
  • Manage key facilities, including the Ashland office, Ross Lake camp, logging camps, company vehicles, and town line maintenance.
  • Develop maintenance schedules for facilities and oversee infrastructure-related contractor activities to ensure alignment with company policies.
  • Monitor and maintain a high standard of safety and aesthetics across all infrastructure assets.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of Townline maintenance activities and coordinate effectively with contractors to ensure timely scheduling and completion of work.
Communication and Motivation:

Qualifications and Skills Required:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in forestry, infrastructure management, construction, or related fields. Seven to ten years of experience, with at least three to five years of managerial experience, preferably with a focus on operational or project management, demonstrating the ability to lead teams, oversee workflows, and ensure successful execution of projects within scope, budget, and timelines. Proven expertise in budget management, strategic planning, and operational logistics. Knowledge of road construction techniques, BMP compliance, and preventive maintenance strategies. Possession of a current Maine Forester’s License or the ability to obtain a Maine Forester’s License. A valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Ability to work independently outside through rugged terrain, in all weather conditions, and in remote locations. Proficiency with GIS, GPS, aerial imagery, and data analysis tools for road and infrastructure planning. Comfortable learning innovative technology. This position includes travel, potentially including nights away from home at our in-woods management camp. Values and demonstrates commitment to safety standards
