May 31, 2027OverviewThe senior directorfor lead laboratory capacity building leads a global initiativeaimed at building and enhancing blood lead laboratory capacity inBrazil, India, Nepal, and sub-Saharan Africa. The initiativefocuses on establishing systems and standards for early detectionand effective monitoring of lead exposure, especially ingeographies with the highest burden of lead poisoning.
With a strongcommitment to the CDC Foundation’s mission, the senior director isresponsible for the technical execution and global coordination ofthe program, with guidance from department leadership, senioradvisors, partners, and global experts. The senior director willleverage expertise and experience in designing and implementinglead poisoning prevention and/or laboratory capacity buildingprograms. This is a high-impact leadership role that requires deeptechnical expertise, exceptional program management skills, andstrong partnership skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Directs andleads the design and execution of a global program to strengthenand enhance blood lead testing laboratory systems across selectlow
- and middle
- income countries.
- Maintains mutually reinforcingpartnerships spanning networks of partners includingphilanthropists, subject matter experts, partner organizations,team members, governmental agencies, multi-lateral agencies, policymakers and sub-awardees.
- Builds strong partnerships withministries of health, ministries of environment, laboratoryleadership and other governmental partners in focus countries andprovides strategic guidance for country engagement and partnershipdevelopment.
- Provides strategic technical oversight for theinitiative and ensures that program standards align withestablished international laboratory standards.
- Leads a team thatprovides technical assistance to countries to develop strategiesfor laboratory workforce development, quality assurance, tools andstandards development, and sustainability.
- Mentors and supervisesprogram staff, including technical and programmatic team members.
- Contributes to resource mobilization in consultation andcollaboration with internal and external partners.
- Formulatesprogram-related goals, objectives, operating policies, strategicplans, guidelines, governance, standards and priorities to ensureconsistency with organization, department and office standardoperating procedures.
- Represents the program and CDC Foundationat scientific, technical, policy and strategic planning meetingswith internal and external partners.
- Travels domestically orinternationally as needed to represent the designated programs andthe CDC Foundation (up to 30 percent annually).
- Participates inand/or leads special projects and other duties asassigned.
Qualifications and Necessary Skills
- Doctor of Philosophyor related degree from an accredited college or university stronglypreferred. Master of Public Health or Master of Science in publichealth, clinical laboratory science, environmental health,toxicology, or related field from an accredited college oruniversity required.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadershipexperience in relevant laboratory capacity building and/or leadpoisoning prevention required.
- Proven and demonstrated experiencein laboratory system strengthening, specifically in clinicalchemistry or toxicology laboratories.
- Experience partnering withand engaging with government agencies and/or laboratories in low-and middle-income countries strongly preferred.
- Understanding andknowledge of globally accepted international laboratory standardsand guidelines for blood lead testing.
- Established publicationrecord including peer-reviewed manuscripts, conferencepresentations, and other technical documents.
- Knowledge and skillsneeded to effectively coordinate a complex network staff globalpartners and experts.
- Strong intercultural communication andconflict resolution skills in diverse, multilingual environments.
- Demonstrated ability to use both consensus and directiveleadership, as appropriate, to accomplish organizational,departmental and programmatic strategic and scientific objectives
- Demonstrated success fostering an inclusive environment workingwith and leading professionals from diverse backgrounds andgeographies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skillswith experience effectively communicating complex technicalconcepts to non-technical audiences and senior leaders from diversebackgrounds.
- Ability to represent the CDC Foundation and itspartners, leading discussions and negotiations concerninglaboratory standards and program strategy.
- Outstandinginterpersonal and teamwork skills; collegial, energetic and able todevelop productive relationships with colleagues, donors andpartners.
- Sound judgment and maturity, exemplified by consistentprofessionalism in collaborating with individuals of varying levelsof seniority both internally and externally.
