General Description Performs difficult technical and administrative work overseeing, planning, directing, and supervising the installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of the electric distribution system, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Electric Superintendent. Continuous supervision is exercised over assigned personnel. Essential Functions Plans, prioritizes, and directs the work electric crews; schedules work duties, verifies timesheets; evaluates the performance of staff.
Supervises the construction and maintenance of distribution lines.
Inspects electric system and determines future needs, upgrades, tree trimming, conducting electric lines, expansions, new construction, etc.
Investigates customer complaints and resolves issues.
Ensures safety precautions for the crew and the public are enforced.
Instructs new employees in safe work practices, training, operation of tools and equipment, etc.
Handles a variety of emergency situations with the electric system, other department needs, or personnel issues.
Prepares and maintains records and files; maintains system and fleet/equipment records.
Oversees maintenance of vehicles and equipment; prepares maintenance and repair work orders for the garage.
Picks up supplies, materials, and equipment for department; ensures materials are charged from the warehouse correctly.
Troubleshoots power outages.
Prepares maps for GIS department for electric system reference.
Checks and verifies metering and wiring sizes for installations of transformers.
Oversees the work of contract crews and inspect work upon completion.
May be required to work outside of normal working hours and in emergency situations, Typical Qualifications High school diploma or GED and extensive experience in the construction and repair of the electrical distribution system including supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of Journeyman Lineman certification upon hire. Completion of Electricities NESC school and Leadership skills for the Crew Leader upon hire or within 24 months of hire. Possession of and ability to maintain Pole Top Rescue and Bucket Rescue certifications. Valid commercial driver’s license in the State of North Carolina. Thorough knowledge of practices, methods, equipment, and tools used in electric utility; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions of the work; thorough knowledge of electrical theory; thorough knowledge of the electrical system, facilities, and areas served; thorough knowledge of the operation of computers and computer programs; thorough knowledge of basic math skills and mathematical calculations; ability to plan and supervise the work of crews; ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form; ability to train subordinate workers to perform emergency services; ability to prepare and maintain records and reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.
