This position is located in the New Hanover County Maintenance Unit located in Castle Hayne. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads in New Hanover County. On a regular and recurring basis, employee operates at least two pieces of equipment, including but not limited to backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patch/crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper. Experience in performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks, such as hauling asphalt, aggregate or soil materials, plowing snow, spreading salt, compacting asphalt, compacting embankments, sweeping roads; loading ditching material; and disposing of roadside debris. Work to include, but not limited to, installation of traffic & erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency responses include traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur. This position is subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Must have ability to act upon both verbal and written communication. May perform a variety of other assigned duties. Employees at this level may train and operate equipment associated with a higher-level positions. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: + Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices + Experience in roadway maintenance and repair in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, asphalt patching, snow and ice removal, crack sealing, full depth patching or pothole patching + Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used + Experience in planning and organizing work + Experience supervising subordinates and directing the daily activities of a work crew Additional Expectations This position is subject to Emergency Call Back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances, which includes responding to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, etc. This job will require work to be performed while suspended at moderate heights, confined areas, over water, in water, in extreme heat and cold, and during inclement weather. May require work during non-traditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. The ability to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/ or in excess of 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Safety toe footwear is required within 30 days of employment. Employee must have ability to act upon both verbal & written communication. Employee must have ability to traverse steep & uneven terrain. Employee must have ability to lift 50 lbs. Employee must be able to work in extreme temperature conditions. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Minimum Education and Experience High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
