This position is located in the New Hanover County Maintenance Unit located in Castle Hayne. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads in New Hanover County. On a regular and recurring basis, employee operates at least two pieces of equipment, including but not limited to backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patch/crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper. Experience in performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks, such as hauling asphalt, aggregate or soil materials, plowing snow, spreading salt, compacting asphalt, compacting embankments, sweeping roads; loading ditching material; and disposing of roadside debris. Work to include, but not limited to, installation of traffic & erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency responses include traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur. This position is subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Must have ability to act upon both verbal and written communication. May perform a variety of other assigned duties. Employees at this level may train and operate equipment associated with a higher-level positions. May require work during non-traditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. The ability to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/ or in excess of 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Safety toe footwear is required within 30 days of employment. Employee must have ability to act upon both verbal & written communication. Employee must have ability to traverse steep & uneven terrain. Employee must have ability to lift 50 lbs. Employee must be able to work in extreme temperature conditions. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire.
