Job Description

As a critical leader within the Corporate Fleet Department, this role is responsible for supporting fleet maintenance operations across a sizeable portion of GFL’s footprint. Working closely with the VP of Corporate Maintenance, this role will be responsible for optimizing R&M performance on a ground level through coaching and advising front line field teams. It will also be responsible for various corporate strategic initiatives as directed by the VP of Fleet for GFL or the VP of Corporate Maintenance. Overall, this role must ensure that GFL Environmental and affiliates meet the service commitments for the collection and transportation of solid/liquid waste or other materials at the lowest cost consistent with sound operating practices, established performance criteria and safety.

Key Responsibilities:

Evaluate and select the equipment for use within GFL Environmental. Study operation needs and analyze comparative performance of different types and styles of equipment consistent with securing the most cost effective and efficient operation. As part of GFL’s Corporate Fleet Support work to evaluate, set and modify fleet maintenance, productivity, fuel and other operational standards and ensure effective methods of communicating and holding field operations accountable for these practices. Work with critical KPI’s and proactively influence positive field outcomes, both in operational performance and cost management. Oversee Fleet Replacement plan for multiple Areas of the company and work with Area staff to ensure long-range planning aligns with needs. Coordinate equipment replacement or recommend additional equipment to ensure the availability of vehicles and equipment to meet service commitments. Provide cost comparison and availability to corporate management and upon approval, facilitate acceptance of purchased equipment into our fleet. Ensure that overall process to collect, store, sell and/or re-distribute surplus vehicular assets and containers (roll-off) are being done effectively and efficiently and ensure life cycle of all equipment under your management is optimized. Understand all laws and regulations within your territory and be a resource to field ops when working with day to day compliance. Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations covering the operation, licensing, insuring and inspection of all fleet vehicles and equipment including EPA Regulations and DOT requirements. Focus on safety and environmental considerations.; know GFL operations and hold sites accountable to our standards. Working with the VP of Maintenance, ensure that corporate policies relating to vehicle operation, maintenance and safety are uniformly observed throughout the companies. Lead effective change management and accountability for use of established corporate vendor accounts for fleet R&M and operations.

PROVIDE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS

Equipment selection, repairs, and maintenance Budget preparations Equipment performance and operating cost Warranty repairs and negotiations Sustainability initiatives Rebuild/replace decisions Maintenance personnel selection, training, evaluation, and wage scales Parts and component purchase decisions (type, pricing, etc.) Accident prevention and safety practices involving vehicles, stationary equipment, and shop areas. Site and building improvements. Coordinate with Regional Management to ensure that the safety lane procedures are in effect at all collection operations.

Additional Responsibilities:

Conform in all respects with applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations, ordinances and other orders and to all company policies, procedures and directives from supervisors. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested by management.

Machines, Tools and Equipment:

Operate standard office equipment (i.e., copier, facsimile, personal computer, etc.) Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word and Excel Understanding of Maintenance Systems and data management practices

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:

Ability to write moderate level correspondence to employees, management and vendors via internal and external memorandums and reports. Possess ability to effectively present information to all levels of employees and executive management in a group or individual setting. Ability to effectively communicate with others.

Requirements:

Ten or more years’ experience in fleet and maintenance. Prior experience within the waste industry Combination of education and/or experience Fluent in use of collaboration and team-building to coach and improve performance without direct authority. Able to work in high stress situations and to bring effective and professional conflict resolution techniques to difficult environments. Ability to communicate both to front-line workers and executive level decision makers; diplomatic and clear in communication and confident in multiple environments.

Physical/Mental Demands:

Ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, talk, hear, and climb. Possess ability to regularly lift/move up to 15 pounds, occasionally lift move up to 30 pounds.

Working conditions:
