Job Description
The Chief Engineer supervises the operation, maintenance, and repair of hotel facilities, equipment, and tools. This involves overseeing and managing engineering staff, and may include a mix of both office work and property maintenance work.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Supervising the maintenance team’s day-to-day operations
- Overseeing the installation and maintenance of equipment
- Planning, scheduling, and prioritizing maintenance team operations
- Ensuring that guests receive prompt, professional, and courteous service
- Ensuring that the function and appearance of all hotel facilities and amenities meet standards
- Reporting major repairs and items which cannot be repaired immediately to management
- Preparing reports on maintenance topics for management
- Performing regular property, equipment, and facilities inspections
- Coordinating responses to maintenance inquires and issues
RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITIES
- Ensuring the smooth daily operation of the hotel
- Ensuring the proper functioning of all safety systems
- Directing and supervising general repairs and preventive maintenance
- Maintaining accurate and adequate maintenance and safety records.
- Thinking quickly and act appropriately in high-pressure and emergency situations.
- Taking responsibility for the cleanliness and safety of plant and equipment rooms
- Developing and implementing maintenance and emergency policies and protocols
- Supervising, training, and developing maintenance staff
- Other duties as assigned by management and/or ownership
REQUIREMENTS
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent requiredAssociate’s degree in Building Maintenance, Technology, or a related field preferredPrevious hotel experience preferred
Knowledge:
Must have a minimum of 3 years hands-on experience working on minor electrical, plumbing, mechanical and HVAC repairs.
Ability to read, speak and write the English language in order to communicate withguests and other hotel employees, fully comprehend job assignments.
Skills:
Basic mechanical aptitude for operation and repair of hotel equipment.
Skill in the use of related tools (including hand and electric tools).
Licenses:
Certificate of Fitness, Fire Safety Director (F-89/T-89)Certificate of Fitness, Super Fuel Piping in Buildings (P-98)Certificate of Fitness, Citywide Standpipe Systems (S-13)Certificate of Fitness, Citywide Sprinkler Systems (S-12)Boiler license (stationary engineer license) preferredCertified Maintenance Professional (CMP) certification preferred
Physical:
Must be able to stand for long periods of timeMay also be required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Position may also require regular lifting of up to 50 pounds.
Ability to push, pull, grasp, lift or carry supplies, equipment or tools weighting up to 100 pounds occasionally.
Other:
Ability to obtain and/or maintain any government required licenses, certificates or permits.
Due to the cyclical nature of the hospitality industry, engineering staff may be required to work varying schedules to reflect the business needs of the hotel.
Must be able to comply with strict deadlines.
