Edward State NY Zip Code 12828 Duties Description As a Canal Maintenance Supervisor 1, you would supervise and assist laborers and skilled tradesworkers doing general construction and repair work in the maintenance of canal banks, locks, and structures. This work includes such jobs as building concrete walls, dams, dikes, and other canal structures; repairing bridge flooring, dams, gates, and valve machinery; pile driving; cutting brush; sand blasting; cleaning ditches and culverts; and doing related maintenance work.

Minimum Qualifications Permanent appointment:

Candidates must be reachable on the Civil Service eligible list for Canal Maintenance Supervisor 1 or eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.

ORNon-Competitive Promotion:

If there are three or fewer qualified candidates interested in this position, a permanent appointment may be possible pursuant to Section 52.7 of the Civil Service Law, for a qualified Canal Corporation employee who meets the minimum qualifications for the position.

To be eligible for Non-Competitive promotion, qualified candidates must have one year of permanent service as a Carpenter, Trades Specialist Carpenter, Chief Lock Operator, Construction Equipment Operator (Heavy), Crane and Shovel Operator, Electrician, Trades Specialist Electrician, Machinist, Trades Specialist Machinist, Maintenance Assistant, Maintenance Assistant (Mechanic), Service & Repair Assistant (Motor Equipment,) Mason and Plasterer, Trades Specialist Mason & Plasterer, Motor Equipment Mechanic, Service & Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment), Motorized Scow Operator, Plumber and Steamfitter, Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter, Steel Fabricator, Welder, or Trades Specialist Welder.

For the duration of the

Program, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary

employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under

NY HELPS

will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a

NY HELPS

title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

Non-Competitive Minimum Qualifications:

Four years of experience in engineering, constructing, or maintaining canal structures such as dams, bridges, canal locks, and canal walls.

Employees must possess a valid Class D driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in NYS at the time of appointment & continuously maintain it thereafter or face possible disciplinary action up to & including termination.
