Position Description:

The Maintenance Lead plays a key leadership role in the day-to-day operations of the Facilities Department. This position is responsible for overseeing and coordinating maintenance tasks across the zoo, ensuring that work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with zoo standards. The Maintenance Lead assists in training and mentoring staff, assigns daily tasks, and acts as the primary point of contact for maintenance issues in the absence of a supervisor. This position may require early or late start times and working weekends and holidays to meet operational needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Supervise and coordinate the daily work of maintenance staff, providing clear direction and support. Assign and track work orders and special projects, ensuring timely completion and adherence to quality standards. Act as a liaison between the Maintenance Area Supervisor and maintenance staff, communicating updates, priorities, and issues. Provide hands-on support in all maintenance-related duties, including tasks in the Maintenance, Housekeeping, and Grounds sections as needed. Oversee set-up and breakdown for Special Events, ensuring staff execute tasks in a timely and efficient manner that meets event standards. Monitor the safe and proper use of tools, vehicles, and equipment; report any issues or needs for repair. Assist in training new maintenance team members and ensure ongoing development of current staff. Maintain a proactive approach to identifying and resolving potential maintenance issues throughout the zoo. Participate in the zoo’s Emergency Response Programs. Collaborate with other departments and support cross-functional needs (e.g., unloading supplies, moving equipment, assisting with cleaning efforts). Serve as acting supervisor in the absence of the Maintenance Area Supervisor, as assigned.

Qualifications Skills:

Strong leadership and organizational abilities with experience directing the work of others. Ability to work independently and effectively manage multiple priorities. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to facility maintenance. Skilled in the safe and effective use of maintenance tools and equipment. Professional interaction with both staff and guests.

Education/Experience:

Must be at least 18 years of age. High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Minimum 3 years of general grounds, landscape, or maintenance experience. Prior leadership or supervisory experience strongly preferred.

Physical Responsibilities:

Ability to work outdoors year-round, including in inclement weather. Must be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and reach for extended periods. Ability to move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance.

Work Schedule:

Weekend, evening, and some holiday work is required.
