Meter Services Worker City of Melbourne – 3.9 Melbourne, FL Job Details Full-time $19.60 – $22.13 an hour 1 day ago Qualifications Customer service Basic math English Computer skills Typing 1 year Hand tools Entry level Load & unload Full Job Description JOB Under the general supervision of the Meter Service Supervisor, performs skilled routine work relating to water meter turn-ons, shut offs, accuracy testing and read verifications. Work also includes service line/water meter leaks repairs, service line/water main leak assessment and/or verification and response to water quality/quantity complaints. Performs other work such as meter reading as directed, using handheld units and a laptop. Work assigned is performed with a minimum amount of direct supervision. Work involves some latitude in determining work methods within established guidelines. Work is reviewed and evaluated by supervision through observations, work orders, progress reports, inspection and conferences.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Turns on and/or shut off water service as required (includes shut off for non-payment). Verifies and assesses reported leaks as requested. Repairs water leaks as they relate to meter washers and/or meter replacement. Replaces water meters and/or water meter registers as necessary. Verifies meter reads and/or serial numbers and Radio Transponder (RT’s) numbers as requested. Assesses condition and accessibility of water meters, water meter boxes and water meter box lids. Replace, raise, meter box lids and make accessible as necessary. Flows fire hydrants and blow-offs as needed to maintain water quality within the system. Acts as a courier for Public Works and Utilities Administration office serving City Hall and other various agencies/businesses throughout the area. Cleans and maintains vehicle and equipment as directed. Performs duties of Meter Reader as directed, using handheld units and a laptop.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Basic knowledge of hand tools as required in water utility customer service. Ability and skill to install, test and/or repair water meters up to 1″ in size. General knowledge of occupational safety rules as they relate to water utility customer service and small service vehicle operation. Knowledge and skill to assess the type and magnitude of water leaks and ability to implement necessary repairs. Knowledge of City’s water distribution system as it relates to residential and commercial meter assembly locations and other water utility interconnects. Ability and skill to work from and to interpret plans, blueprints and maps. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and the general public. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability and skill to generate and communicate through written reports and memos. Ability to effectively and efficiently use computer based meter reading system on both handheld units and a laptop.

Physcial and Mental Requirements Ability to read and comprehend work orders, equipment/tool manuals, safety manuals, computer screen, computer print outs, and other printed and/or written material as it relates to the job. Ability to understand and comprehend area maps as they relate to the locations of water mains, meters, valves, services, hydrants and blow offs. Ability to understand and comprehend basic math as it relates to volumes, and pressure and GPM. Ability to identify and comprehend colors as they relate to traffic and/or road signs, safety equipment, utility markings, and other utility related materials. Ability to hear and understand instructions and directions given in the English language and spoken in a normal tone of voice with someone face-to-face and over two-way radio and cell phones. Hear verbal warnings and basic instructions given by co-workers while working in noisy environments, confined spaces or in the immediate vicinity of heavy equipment. Ability to verbally communicate with co-workers and others in the English language face-to-face and over two-way radio and cell phones. Ability to write up work orders, warehouse material requisitions, vehicle service forms, and technical memos in a legible and understandable manner. Ability to type on computer keyboard and use touch tone telephone dialing keys as well as cell phone in an efficient and safe manner and follow cell phone laws while driving and adhering to City cell phone policies. Ability to understand and adhere to the division safety procedures and policies. Ability to work while bending, kneeling, stooping, standing, sitting, and/or stretching. May be required to move laterally in the any of the above mentioned positions, frequently throughout the day. Ability to walk over and around cluttered work areas and uneven surfaces. Work while standing on uneven and/or wet surfaces. Ability to enter confined spaces such as meter vaults. Ability to work for extended periods in all weather conditions. Ability to maintain a professional attitude while working in close proximity with others and under situations of duress. Ability to communicate in a professional manner with the general public. Ability to receive directions and constructive criticism from departmental management. Ability to walk extended distances up to three (3) miles while reading meters. Relocate vehicle and repeat scenario. Ability to climb into, operate and climb out of small service vehicle numerous times during the work day. Ability to skillfully and efficiently use such hand tools as open end/socket wrenches, screwdrivers, wrenches, shovel, rake, etc. Ability to safely load, unload and set meter boxes and meter box lids weighing up to 30 lbs. Ability to operate City vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
