POSITION SUMMARY Conducts field investigations, disconnects and connects water meters and verifies and maps new service installations. Receives work assignments from the Meter Reader Coordinator and communicates with customers regarding the status of their meter(s) and of their water usage. In accordance with Article 24 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769, for posting purposes this open-competitive job posting shall be considered as a simultaneous internal and external posting (it is open to both internal City employees and external applicants).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation. Receives work orders; connects and disconnects meters; verifies meter readings, meter numbers, and house numbers before initiating or discontinuing service
Conducts field investigations to answer questions and/or concerns and verify reads
Verifies and maps the location of new service installation of water meters to incorporate into assigned meter reading routes
Coordinates with other service workers to complete connections, disconnections, and meter investigations
Enters data into meter management programs and Asset Management Systems
Explains department billing procedures and requirements for starting and terminating service to utility customers
Inspects meter installation; cleans meter boxes, reports leaks, defective meters, or damaged meter boxes, and any other necessary repairs
Uses iPad, hand-held tools and metering technology
Ensures compliance with safety regulations and standard operating procedures
Performs related work as required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS, PREFERENCES & WORK ENVIRONMENT

High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalency
Must possess at least one (1) year of related experience. Veterans’ preference per Florida law. If claiming Veteran’s Preference, candidates must attach a DD214 Member 4 form, and the City of Fort Lauderdale’s veteran’s preference claim form (J-204) to the online application. As public servants, employees may be required to work immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency. All employees must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The position involves medium physical demands, such as exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Ability to lift, stoop, bend, crawl, kneel and climb ladders up to 10 feet in performing a variety of job-related tasks. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
