JOB SUMMARY

The CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) Technician is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, and operation of CNG fueling infrastructure at the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority. This includes compressors, drive motors, dryers, dispensers, storage systems, and associated control and safety systems. The technician ensures that the CNG fueling station is operating safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 1.

Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs on CNG fueling equipment, including compressors, dispensers, control panels, valves, and pressure regulators. 2. Conduct daily inspections and diagnostics of the CNG fueling system to identify performance issues and ensure optimal functionality. 3. Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, repairs, and system performance logs. 4. Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic electrical, and pneumatic malfunctions in CNG systems using appropriate tools and test equipment. 5. Monitor the operation of the CNG plant through SCADA or HMI systems and respond promptly to alarms and system anomalies. 6. Coordinate with equipment manufacturers and vendors for technical support and warranty issues. 7. Ensure the proper functioning and safety of emergency shutdown systems and fire suppression equipment related to CNG fueling. 8. Maintain compliance with NFPA 52, OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other applicable regulations and codes. 9. Assist with installation, commissioning, and testing of new CNG infrastructure or upgrades. 10. Ensure proper housekeeping and cleanliness of fueling station and surrounding areas. 11. Provide technical support and training to other maintenance staff as needed. 12. Participate in after-hours emergency response for fueling equipment issues. 13. Follow all BJCTA safety policies and procedures and wear appropriate PPE. 14. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School diploma or GED required. Technical certification or associate degree in mechanical, electrical, or industrial maintenance preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION

Valid State of Alabama Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B with air brake endorsement required or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire. EPA 608 certification (preferred). OEM training certifications from CNG equipment manufacturers (e.g., ANGI, Galileo, Clean Energy) are a plus. Confined Space Entry and

certification preferred. CNG Technician certification required. (If not currently certified, you must obtain CNG Technician Certification within 6 months of date of hire).

EXPERIENCE

Minimum of 3 years’ experience in maintenance or repair of CNG fueling systems or similar industrial gas compression systems

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 1.

Strong understanding of CNG fueling systems, including compression, storage, and dispensing technologies. 2. Proficient with mechanical systems, electrical troubleshooting, and pneumatic controls. 3. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and wiring diagrams. 4. Working knowledge of safety standards and best practices for handling compressed gases and high-pressure systems. 5. Ability to use diagnostic tools, laptop computers, pressure gauges, multimeters, and calibration instruments. 6. Strong communication skills and ability to work independently or in a team setting. 7. Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office and maintenance management software (e.g., AVAIL).

Physical Demands:

Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Frequent bending, standing, walking, kneeling, and climbing.
