Position Summary:
The Optical Technician / Ophthalmic Assistant plays a key role in delivering friendly, efficient, and professional care in a high-volume eye care setting. This position supports comprehensive eye care services by assisting with patient exams, preparing optical prescriptions, and handling administrative duties. The ideal candidate is customer-focused, detail-oriented, and adaptable to a dynamic healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities Clinical Support:
Greet and assist patients to create a welcoming and professional environment Perform patient intake including history, visual acuity (VAs), extraocular movements (EOMs), pupil assessment, confrontation fields, intraocular pressures (IOPs), contact lens insertion/removal, and refraction Conduct diagnostic imaging and tests such as Fundus Photography and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Assist provider during eye exams and with additional procedures as needed Prepare and maintain exam rooms and ensure patient charts are ready for provider review Accurately document all findings in patient records
Optical Services:
Read and interpret spectacle and contact lens prescriptions Measure pupillary distances (PDs), fit frames, and perform lensometry Track and manage spectacle prescription orders and frame inventory Dispense and adjust eyeglasses and contact lenses per provider prescriptions Prepare, repair, and maintain eyeglasses as needed
Patient Service Representative Support:
Answer incoming calls and assist or direct callers appropriately Explain services, hours of operation, and assist with patient scheduling and check-in/check-out Process referrals, authorizations, and insurance documentation Make appointment reminder calls and manage follow-ups Collect payments and assist with billing inquiries Required Skills and Abilities Excellent communication and customer service skills Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a high-volume, fast-paced environment Strong attention to detail with critical thinking and problem-solving skills Professional demeanor and ability to maintain confidentiality Comfort using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) Ability to follow safety protocols and contribute to a safe work environment Qualifications High school diploma or GED required Minimum of 1 year experience in an optometric, ophthalmic, or medical office preferred Certification (COA, COT, COMT, CPO, CPOA) strongly preferred Proficient in Microsoft Office applications IND2
