The Water/Sewer Technician is responsible for performing a variety of tasks such as water and sewer line repairs, lift station repairs, meter reads, locates, fire hydrant installation, and other related to the maintenance and repair of water and sewer distribution systems within the City of Sparta, GA. The Water/Sewer Maintenance Worker will provide additional support for repairs and maintenance at both the water and wastewater treatment plants and collaborate with other departments on general maintenance tasks when needed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform routine maintenance, repairs, and inspections of water distribution and sewer collection systems.
- Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools, various machinery, and heavy equipment used in maintenance activities.
- Assist in the installation and replacement of water and sewer lines, valves, hydrants, and other related components.
- Respond to emergency maintenance requests and system failures promptly and efficiently.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, including maintenance logs and inspection reports.
- Follow safety protocols and procedures while performing tasks to ensure personal and public safety.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and the public regarding maintenance activities and service interruptions.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Assist with natural gas operations, including locates, safety training, and emergency response as needed.
- Provide support for repairs and maintenance at the water treatment plant and wastewater treatment plant, ensuring operational efficiency, as needed.
- Collaborate with other departments to assist with general maintenance, groundskeeping, and other tasks as necessary.
- All other tasks as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Basic knowledge of water and sewer system operations, strong plumbing, and/or maintenance and mechanical skills preferred.
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations related to water and wastewater management preferred.
- Ability to work overtime and respond to emergencies as needed.
- Ability to operate various tools and equipment safely and effectively.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written preferred.
- Basic computer skills for data entry and reporting purposes.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the job, including lifting and moving equipment.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
The work involves heavy physical effort, requiring the ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force. The role includes activities such as standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting. Work is primarily performed outdoors, sometimes in adverse weather conditions, and may involve exposure to hazardous materials. Occasional local and out-of-town travel may be necessary for training and operational needs.
Qualifications:
- Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.) is required.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in water and sewer maintenance or a related field preferred.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment and maintain it as a condition of continued employment.
- Georgia Water Distribution or Sewer Collections license is preferred but not required.
Special Requirements:
- Requires an acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check, and a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Requires satisfactory results from a pre-employment alcohol and controlled substance testing.
- This position is deemed safety-sensitive and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing.
