#404 The City ofPittsfield’s Department of Public Utilities, Water Division, iscurrently seeking to fill the position of Water & Sewer MaintenancePerson. This individual is responsible for performing skilled manual andequipment-assisted work, and operates hydraulic equipment and vehiclesin the construction, operation, and maintenance of water distributionand sewage collection systems. The incumbent will be required to beavailable to respond to emergency & trouble calls on a rotating 24 houra day basis. RESPONSIBILITIES

• Performs skilledmanual & equipment-assisted work in the construction, operation &maintenance of water distribution and sewage collection systems,including work on reservoirs, valves, water & sewer pipes, pumpingstations, manholes, vaults etc., operates valves and stops to turn wateror sewage on or off.
• Operates loaders, backhoes, heavy trucks andspecialized sewer cleaning equipment in the performance of dutiesassigned, including snow clearance and salting or sanding. Performsdaily servicing and maintenance on equipment assigned.
• Cuts, lays, andcaulks water & sewer pipes using machine or hand tools; performs masonryduties in the construction of manholes and catch basins and other systembrick, block, or concrete structures; pumps water from trenches andpits, digs, braces and backfills excavations for the purpose ofconstructing or maintaining water distribution or sewer collectionsystems, and replaces worn or broken parts in water distribution orsewage collection systems.
• Reads, installs or replaces water metersand checks them for over/under registration.
• May work with contractorsin the marking out and/or location of water and sewer pipe andappurtenant devices and structures during construction or excavation.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diplomaor equivalent.
• Two years’ experience operating heavy equipment suchas trucks, snowplows, loader/backhoes, bulldozers, loaders, tractors,etc.
• Two years’ experience as a pipe layer or equivalent in theconstruction or maintenance of water distribution and sewage collectionsystems.
• Demonstrated ability to read and use drawings and utilityservice maps.
• Valid Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver’s Licensewith Air Brake endorsement and 2B Hoisting License. Within six months ofappointment, incumbent must obtain a Tanker endorsement to the CDL.
• Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, toestablish positive public relations for the municipality and department,and to interact effectively with a wide variety of people. HOURSMonday
