Qualifications Educationand Experience:
Education equivalent to completion of one year ofcoursework at a vocational or technical school in communicationequipment repair or other related field and experience equivalentto four years of increasingly and skilled responsible full-timecommunications technical work; qualifying full-time communicationstechnical work may be substituted for the required education on ayear-for-year basis.

Be willing to and able to qualify with, carry, and use assignedweapons. Be eligible to receive and maintain a security clearance inaccordance with applicable agency regulations. Overview Summary:
Under generalsupervision, is responsible for radio communications technical workof considerable difficulty; and performs related work asrequired.
Distinguishing Features:
This is the lead and/or advanced workinglevel class in the Radio Communications Tech sub-series. Anemployee in this class leads in the installation, maintenance, andrepair of a variety of communications equipment, including mobileradios, base stations, and transmitting towers. This class differsfrom Radio Communications Tech 2 in that an incumbent of the latteris not a lead worker and performs duties of lesser scope andcomplexity.
Responsibilities Repairing and Maintaining ElectronicEquipment:
Repairs radio transmitting equipment/systems (to include fixed,mobile, portable devices and ancillary equipment-lighting andsirens) utilizing necessary test equipment including PC, test set,hand tools, etc. to ensure reliable communications. Performs preventative maintenance on radio transmittingequipment systems according to FCC guidelines and manufacturer’sspecifications to prevent system failure. Installs radio transmitting equipment/systems in vehiclesand/or structures according to system operational parameters tomeet operational needs of the user. Programs system parameters, talk groups, frequencies, etc.using computer software to maintain or set up radio transmittingequipment/systems (such as
P25 – IP
network, microwavepoint-to-point and analog communications).

Uses fine motor skills in daily work activities (such asinstalling connections, soldering components and connectors,crimping fittings/connectors and pulling fuses) to install,maintain or repair electrical radio transmittingequipment/systems.
Evaluating Information to

Ensures compliance of State equipment with agency, state andfederal laws/guidelines, etc. through inspection andmeasurement.
Making Decisions and Solving Problems:
Assesses daily problems (such as broken equipment, unusualneeds/situations, resource availability) and determines appropriateaction (fabricates or makes adjustments to equipment, knowing whoto call for staffing/technical support).
Interacting WithComputers:
Programs radio transceivers, IP routers and switches usingup-to-date, specialized manufacturer’s computer software andspecialized interface equipment to set up system parameters. Programs security/safety equipment including emergencylighting, camera and siren systems using computer software. Uses computer for daily functions including e-mail systems,word processing systems, data base programs, spreadsheets andwindows environments.
Organizing, Planning, and PrioritizingWork:
Determines work to be accomplished by referencing thedivision’s priority of service which is organized by supervisor asdetermined by level of system interruption, emergency conditions,safety and health.
Coordinating the
Work and Activities ofOthers:
Oversees and coordinates the scheduled work ofvendors/contractors as the agency’s on-site representative toverify the work is accomplished per specifications. Coordinates the installation/removal and repair of radiosystems by scheduling work activities/logistics of radio personneland users. Facilitates the sharing of relevant data/information to promoteseamless interoperability with local government officials and otheragencies.
Performing General Physical Activities:
Carries equipment (such as service monitors, test equipment,batteries and hand tools) averaging 40 lbs. in weight for shortdistances. Works in close quarters such as the trunk of a vehicle, underthe dash of a vehicle and crowded equipment enclosures. Bends, stoops, squats, etc. to pick up equipment, load servicevehicle and install equipment.
Getting Information:
Listens to radio systems to identify potential problems (noise,distortion, anomalies) or loss of communication. Visually monitors fault management terminal to detect potentialproblems. Gathers equipment failure information from clients via e-mailor telephone to determine course of action. Visually inspects equipment to determine cause of problem andactions needed to repair.
Inspecting Equipment, Structures, orMaterial:
Utilizes test equipment (such as service monitor, computerdiagnostic software, watt meter) to detect possible failure anddiscrepancies from performance parameters. Visually inspects equipment (such as towers, equipmentshelters, power sources) to detect possible failure anddiscrepancies from performance parameters. Inspects physical aspects of the property (such as fences,grounding equipment, HVAC systems) to determine if the cause of theproblem is due to a security breach. Inspects environmental controls (such as structural integrity,HVAC systems, lighting) to ensure proper performance of allequipment.

Provides technical expertise to agency users taking intoconsideration the equipment and system needs and the concerns ofusers. Shares relevant data/information with staff of other agenciesto promote reliable and efficientcommunication.

Fills out work ticket (electronic or paper) forinstalled/repaired radio equipment to be used for inventorydatabase, maintenance/station log. Enters time and labor or expense information electronically todocument weekly schedule and work related travel. Maintains and updates code plug and other radio databases withcurrent frequency and system operating parameters.
