job title: Marine Growth Removal Technician We are seeking a hardworking and reliable Marine Growth Removal Technician to be responsible for the crucial task of removing barnacles and other marine growth from the hulls of ships and barges. This physically demanding role plays a vital part in maintaining the efficiency and structural integrity of marine vessels. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and comfortable working in and around water.
Responsibilities:
- Utilize specialized power tools and hand tools, such as grinders, scrapers, and high-pressure washers, to effectively remove barnacles, algae, and other marine fouling from vessel surfaces.
- Adhere strictly to safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times, including but not limited to respirators, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, and protective clothing.
- Work efficiently and thoroughly to ensure all marine growth is removed according to established standards.
- Inspect vessel surfaces for any damage or abnormalities during the cleaning process and report findings to the supervisor.
- Maintain and clean assigned tools and equipment, ensuring they are in safe and proper working order.
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of work areas, including staging and safety barriers.
- Follow instructions and work collaboratively with team members.
- Dispose of removed marine growth and waste materials in an environmentally responsible manner.
- Potentially work in various weather conditions and at different locations within the port or shipyard.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- No specific prior experience is required; however, experience in manual labor, construction, or marine-related fields is a plus.
- Ability to safely and effectively operate power tools and hand tools.
- Physical stamina and the ability to perform repetitive tasks for extended periods.
- Comfort working in and around water, including potentially on docks, in confined spaces, and at varying heights.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to thoroughness.
- Ability to understand and follow safety regulations and procedures.
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Basic communication skills.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
