Description of Work This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits , competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. This posting is for a Transportation Worker III in the Division One Equipment Unit and will primarily function as Lowboy Operator. Possess knowledge of the proper operation and minor maintenance of the vehicle operated, applicable traffic rules and regulations, a variety of delivery routes, detailed record keeping, and proper load and weight distribution methods. Work may include familiar with ICC Regulations and weight specifications. Work involves ability to maneuver a 75,000 GVW tractor trailer up to 50 tons. Work requires continued traffic monitoring and operation of a 2-way radio. Requires above average hand-eye coordination. Requires sitting for long periods of time. Ability to load and unload vehicle in all types of weather and secure heavy loads. Work may be performed in hazardous weather or traffic conditions. Must have the ability to lift and carry up to 80lbs. May be required to do general maintenance work such as mowing, picking up parts and assisting in shop maintenance. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Demonstrated ability to load and unload vehicles in all types of weather and secure heavy loads
Demonstrated ability to work in potentially hazardous traffic conditions including situations involving inclement weather
Skills to operate various types of equipment from pickup trucks to excavators
Knowledge and experience in tractor trailers and hauling equipment
Experience performing manual labor
Additional Expectations:
The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a back ground statement(ALCDRG-06)mustbesignedallowingtheNCDOTtocheckwithpreviousemployersforthepast three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is needed. Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Employee will be subject to outside extreme environmental conditions, in addition to hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
