APPRENTICE LINEMAN
City of Fairburn, GA Fairburn, GA 30213 The City of Fairburn is seeking to fill an Apprentice Lineman position. This position will be assigned to the apprenticeship program and under direct supervision will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, alteration and repair of overhead electrical lines, underground cables, electrical substations, and related electrical equipment. This is a progressive working/training position to becoming a qualified Electric Lineman. Reports to the Electric Superintendent.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in construction, maintenance and repair of power distribution systems (which may include a dump truck, backhoe, trencher, bucket truck, line truck, boring rig, tension rig, tamp, tractor, phasing stick, voltage ohmmeter, breakers, regulators, hydraulic tools, jackhammer, air compressor, pipe horn, post hole digger, shovel, axe, saw, chain saw, mechanic tools, etc.). Performs manual work functions associated with substation maintenance as well as construction, maintenance and repair of power distribution systems (which may include assisting with laying/installing pipe, boring under roads/driveways, pouring concrete, trimming tree limbs and bushes, digging holes or trenches, driving ground rods, shoveling materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, flagging traffic, etc). Assists in installing, maintaining and repairing underground and overhead structures including high mast lighting and streetlight systems, poles, cables and related equipment to carry power transmission/distribution lines used to conduct electrical energy between generating stations, substations and consumers. Assists in installing transformers, insulators, lightning arresters, switches, wire conductors, and auxiliary equipment to poles Reconstructs existing lines and related fittings. Assists in installing transformers, insulators, lightning arresters, switches, wire conductors, and auxiliary equipment to poles. Assists in opening switches or clamping grounding device to energized equipment to de-energize lines or accessories. Transports, loads, and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects; maintains adequate supply of equipment, tools, supplies and materials on trucks for use at work sites. Participates in and completes the Accredited Apprentice Lineman Training program through the Electric Cities of Georgia (ECG); completes homework, and classroom assignments with written testing, hands-on testing, and all other duties as required. Adheres to safety rules and to national, state, and local codes. Responds to emergency calls during hurricanes, inclement weather, or other emergency situations, and requires on-call assignment. QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED and supplemented by one (1) year of related experience and vocational electrical training; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Licenses or Certifications:
Valid Class A or B CDL driver’s license required. Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL within one year of hire date.
Special Requirements:
Requires an acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check, and a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Requires pre-employment medical evaluation and satisfactory results from a pre-employment alcohol and controlled substance testing in accordance DOT federal regulations. This position is deemed safety-sensitive and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, materials, and equipment involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of an electric utility system. Knowledge of safety work practices and procedures and relevant state and federal regulations. Knowledge of pertinent first-aid principles and techniques including resuscitation methods. Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures. Ability to evaluate, audit, and assess data using established criteria; includes exercising discretion in determining actual or probable consequences and in referencing such evaluation to identify and select alternative. Ability to think and act quickly and appropriately in emergencies. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English in person and over the phone. Ability to work effectively as a team player, take the initiative and make constructive recommendations to improve overall departmental efficiency. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Ability to use protective clothing and equipment such as masks, coats, vests, hard hats, boots, goggles, gloves, reflective vest and other safety devices. Ability to operate or learn to operate personal computer hardware and software associated with UPC locate activities. Skill in use of operating hand and power tools, vehicles, and related light & medium duty equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is moderate work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force. Work requires regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in an outdoor environment. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.
