Job Description

  • Position Overview
  • This is an apprentice level position for active training in line work in the construction and maintenance of overhead/underground distribution lines. Specialized skills necessary for the safe construction, operation and maintenance for a reliable electric system will be developed in this position.
  • Primary Job Functions
  • Develop the technical skills necessary for the construction, operation and maintenance for a reliable electric system.
  • Become familiar with equipment, hardware and other tools necessary for the performance of tasks; maintains and repairs as directed.
  • Become familiar with and remains current on Central EPA’s safety practices and procedures, CPR, first aid and rescue procedures; displays a knowledge of safe working practices set forth in Central EPA’s Safety Manual through daily work practices.
  • Provides lineman with tools and equipment as they direct.
  • Maintains job location in a safe and neat condition; responsible for keeping tools and work equipment in orderly arrangement on truck when not in use.
  • Assists equipment operator with installing overhead and underground and apparatus and assists with anchors and hanging of aerial devices.
  • Assists in loading material for the job; checks previously used materials.
  • Learns how to frame and align poles according to RUS specifications and installs equipment and hardware.
  • Under close supervision, becomes proficient in climbing and performing duties on de-energized poles.
  • Operates automotive equipment when assigned; complies with all traffic laws, safety rules, regulations and safe practices while operating vehicle assigned o him/her; should at all times show utmost concern for the safety of the vehicle, its occupants and its load.
  • Trims trees and clears right-of-way whenever necessary.
  • Under close supervision, patrols and checks lines and performs trouble shooting activities.
  • Promotes good consumer/member relations by avoiding crop damage, breaking fences, leaving gates open, etc.
  • Performs other work as assigned by supervisor or directed by other specified crew members.
  • Must be eager to fulfill responsibilities and job functions.
  • Participates in daily job briefings and safety discussions.
  • Understands and utilizes all forms of PPE to protect against the hazards that exist; including falls, electric shock, electric arcs, automobile traffic, and falling objects.
  • Completes tasks given by the Construction Foreman in efficient and safe manner.
  • Responds promptly and efficiently to all outage calls and emergencies.
  • Must be able to be on call and work overtime as requested.
  • Secondary Job Functions
  • Keeps informed and complies with all Central EPA line work rules and procedures related to line work.
  • Complies with all Central EPA safety rules and regulations.
  • Operates and maintains properly all equipment and vehicles. 
  • Reports any equipment that is not in good working order to the appropriate people.
  • Utilize radio for communications.
  • Participates in monthly Job Safety Meetings.
  • JOB SPECIFICATIONS
  • A.
  • Education and Accreditation(s
  • ): High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • B.
  • Experience:
  • Preferred, Minimum of three years apprentice lineman experience or successful completion of a Lineman Training Program with a minimum of two years apprentice lineman experience.
  • C.
  • Knowledge:
  • On the job training is provided. Knowledge of CPR and first aid procedures is helpful. Must be aware and comply with National Electrical Safety Code requirements.

  • Abilities/Skills:
  • Must be physically able to perform act vities required in the construction and maintenance of distribution lines, which include climbing, bending, stooping, lifting and moving objects weighing up to 100 pounds.

Ability to operate line equipment, vehicles, chainsaws and other right-of-way equipment required. Must have to ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to read, comprehend and satisfactorily complete any training manua
