GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs difficult technical and supervisory work in the installation, maintenance and repair of the electric overhead and underground distribution system. Work is performed under general supervision. Supervision is exercised over subordinate crew members.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS
Supervising a crew of power line technicians involved in installing, maintaining and repairing overhead and underground electric distribution system and related facilities and operating equipment;
Makes daily work assignments to subordinate staff;
Climbs poles, operates bucket truck, installs hardware, fuses transformers and pulls wires;
Assembles and fastens cross-arm sets on erection poles;
Maintains existing high and low voltage power lines;
Strings, splices and solders wire and fastens insulators on poles;
Uses hot line equipment and tools;
Replaces malfunctioning equipment on poles; installs and replaces poles;
Installs, repairs and maintains underground and overhead service; trims trees;
Installs transformers and other auxiliary equipment;
Reconnects lines and fastens guy wires;
Installs and removes cross arms cutouts, lightning arrestors, primary and secondary lines, span guys, etc.;
Carries out requisite ground work in preparation for and at the conclusion of a job and maintains appropriate records and files;
Locates and marks underground electrical wires when needed;
Handles a variety of emergency problems;
Performs stand-by duty and works emergency calls often during adverse weather conditions;
Operates a substation;
Trims and prunes trees around power lines and cuts grass on right-of-ways;
Supervises and participates in emergency repairs after disruption of service;
Provides input into performance evaluations of subordinate technicians;
Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and considerable experience in electric line construction and maintenance at a journeyman level.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods, equipment, materials and tools used in the erection and maintenance of electric lines; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with the work and the safety precautions to be taken; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and subordinates; skill in the operation of a variety of line maintenance equipment; strength to perform manual work and physical stamina to withstand working under adverse weather conditions; ability to assign, supervise and evaluate the work of other employees; ability to climb poles and work off climbing hooks.
