Woodworking Shop Associate/Manager Middletown Lumber 2 Clinton Avenue, Middletown, PA 17057
Position Summary:
Middletown Lumber is a busy lumberyard and building materials supplier known for high-quality products and reliable service. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Woodworking Shop Manager & Estimator to lead our custom job processing operations. This role is responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations in our small woodworking shop, estimating jobs for custom work, and ensuring high standards of craftsmanship and safety. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, a hands-on leader, and able to manage a mix of production, estimating, and customer interaction. Primary responsibilities include overseeing custom moulding runs, cutting and modifying lumber and sheet goods, and managing small-scale woodworking projects that support our contractor and retail clients.
Key Responsibilities:
Shop Operations
- Manage daily operations of the woodworking shop including scheduling, workflow, inventory, and maintenance of equipment.
- Operate woodworking machinery (e.g., table saws, planers, jointers, moulders, sanders) safely and efficiently.
- Supervise and train other shop staff (as needed) and ensure compliance with safety and quality protocols.
- Ensure cleanliness and organization of the workspace. Job Estimating & Project Coordination
- Meet with customers, sales staff, and contractors to discuss job specifications and provide professional recommendations.
- Review drawings, plans, and customer requests to create detailed estimates for time, labor, and materials.
- Generate job tickets and coordinate with the front office to schedule production.
- Track project progress, timelines, and ensure customer satisfaction on completion. Material Processing & Custom Work
- Perform custom cuts, sanding, planing, milling, and moulding of lumber and panel products.
- Assist in the creation and modification of trim, casing, and other moulding profiles.
- Prepare materials for special orders and coordinate delivery or pick-up with yard and sales staff. Inventory & Equipment Management
- Maintain an accurate inventory of custom millwork stock and order supplies as needed.
- Conduct routine inspections and basic maintenance of woodworking tools and machinery.
Qualifications:
- 3+ years experience in woodworking, carpentry, or shop management.
- Proven experience estimating materials and labor for custom projects.
- Strong knowledge of woodworking tools, techniques, and safety protocols.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
- Computer proficiency (Excel, email, estimating software a plus).
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for long periods, and safely operate power tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in a lumberyard or building materials environment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and technical documents.
- Familiarity with hardwoods, softwoods, plywood, MDF, and composite decking products.
- Knowledge of custom moulding manufacturing or profile creation.
