- Advanced Level will have knowledge of the processes for Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) as required by this position.
The incumbent required to maintain current knowledge of the Standard Opering Procedures (SOPs) which document the processes and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, sterilizion and preparion of RME approprie to this position. The incumbent able to demonstre their ability to utilize an acceptable proficiency in the use of RME approprie to this position. The Incumbent will assemble highly complex instrument sets used in the opering room and clinical setting including, but not limited to: open heart, major orthopedic total joint, cardiovascular, craniotomy, thoracic and complex endoscopic instrumention. Processes all complex endoscopic instrumention to include those medical devices used in gastroenterology laborory, bronchoscopy laborory, urology and opering room. Reviews manufacturer guidelines to ensure the correct methods and parameters are followed when cleaning, decontamining and sterilizing RME. Troubleshoots and analyzes mechanical failures and makes necessary adjustments to complex decontaminion and sterilizion equipment, as well as interprets alarm conditions which may occur while opering the equipment. Informs management and healthcare staff when cleaning and processing standard opering procedures (SOPs) or instruction for use have been changed or upded to assure the changes have been valided to meet all guidelines. Duties may include but are not limited to the following: Knowledge of standard precautions for safety and prevention of cross contaminion. Knowledge of event-reled packaging in regard to sterility. Knowledge of medical terminology, anomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures. Knowledge of sterility principles in regard to instrumention. Ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures. Receives contamined critical and semi-critical RME in decontaminion area. Disassembles RME and determines the correct cleaning method, such as but not limited to ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washers, cart washers and chemical cleaning/decontaminion agents as determined by manufactures instructions. Inspects, prepares, assembles and determines the correct method and packaging for sterilizion such as but not limited to steam, plasma, hydrogen peroxide and high-level disinfection. May be required to prepare opering room case carts daily utilizing the surgery schedule, applying the knowledge of medical terminology, anomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures. Removes soil, blood, tissue fragments, body fluids and other contaminants by wiping, soaking, rinsing and scrubbing using the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to avoid any cross contaminion. Inspects packages for indicions of proper sterilizion. Assembles basic and specialty instrument sets and trays used throughout the medical center including those used in the opering room. Performs segments of work pertaining to the decontaminion, sterilizion and inspection RME. Operes equipment involved in sterilizion processes. Performs and documents daily operional checks and records for all sterilizion equipment. Receives guidance from Supervisor.

Six months of experience th demonstres the applicant’s ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work;

One year above high school th included least 6 semester hours in health care reled courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and opering room and surgical technician courses or other courses reled to the position;
- OR•Experience/Educion Combinion .
Equivalent combinion of experience and educion are qualifying for entry level for which both educion and experience are acceptable. Foreign Educion. To be creditable, educion completed outside the U.S. must have been submitted to a prive organizion th specializes in the interpretion of foreign educional credentials and such educion must have been deemed least equivalent to th gained in conventional U.S. programs. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfhering Provision as described in the VA Qualificion Standard for this occupion (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupion and meet the criteria). Grandfhering Provision . All MSTs th are employed in VHA in this occupion on the effective de of this qualificion standard are considered to have met all qualificion requirements for the title, series and grade held, th are part of the basic requirements of the occupion. For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements required in this standard, but who met the qualificions applicable to the position the time they were appointed to it, the following provisions apply: (1) Employees grandfhered into the GS-622 occupional series as MSTs may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance (journeyman) level, or changed to lower grade within the occupion. (2) MSTs who are appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective de of the qualificion standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed, on a temporary or permanent basis until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard. (3) MSTs who are converted to title 38 hybrid stus under this provision and subsequently leave the occupion lose protected stus and must meet the full VA qualificion standard requirements in effect the time of reentry to the occupion.
GRADE REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the Basic Requirements provided above, the following are the grade requirements. Creditable Experience . (1) Knowledge of Current MST Practices . To be creditable, the experience must have demonstred the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) associed with MST responsibilities. Experience sisfying this requirement may be paid/non-paid employment as a MST. (2) Quality of Experience . Qualifying experience must be a level comparable to MST experience the next lower grade level of the position being filled. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, administrive independence, complexity (difficulty) and range of variety as described in this standard the specified grade level and be performed by the incumbent least 25% of the time. (3) Part-Time Experience . Part-time experience as a MST is creditable according to its relionship to the full-time workweek. For example, a MST employed 20 hours a week, or on a ½ time basis would receive 1 full-time workweek for 2 weeks of service.

1. Detailed knowledge of complex surgical instruments used in opering rooms and clinic settings. 2. Ability to assemble specialty opering room and clinic instrument sets. 3. In-depth knowledge of sterilizion and cleaning equipment. 4. Ability to communice both orally and in writing in order to convey informion and thoughts to others. Assignment. Physical Requirements:

This work is performed in various settings: decontaminion, preparion, clean sterile supply (preparion) and in other services and departments throughout the medical facility/campus. The incumbent may be required to work in areas th are hot, cold, drafty and poorly lighted. The employee is subject to the possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, and other injuries from merial handling equipment. The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages (occasionally weighing as much as 25 pounds). The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for manipuling, disassembly and assembly of instrumention.
