Overview The Lead Puppet Painter is a key creative and technical role responsible for using advanced painting techniques to bring puppets and character elements to life, aligning with the film’s established color palette. Collaborating closely with Creative Leadership, the Lead Puppet Painter employs methods such as silicone painting, airbrushing, and fine brushwork to achieve a realistic, nuanced finish. This role also includes mentoring junior painters, maintaining consistent quality across puppet replicas, and overseeing supplies and inventory for efficient workflow.

Key Responsibilities Surface Painting:

Apply advanced painting techniques to various surfaces, including silicone, models, and textiles, with experience painting in resin and silicone molds to maintain alignment with the creative vision.

Detail-Oriented Painting:

Use methods such as airbrushing, brushwork, pastels, and texture work to achieve fine details and realistic textures on three-dimensional forms.

Fabric & Fiber Painting:

Enhance costume textures to match character designs.

Color Matching & Formulation:

Develop and match colors with precision to ensure rich, consistent on-camera appearance.

Problem Solving:

Address complex painting challenges, such as color durability and surface interaction, to ensure high-quality results.

Documentation:

Maintain detailed records of paint formulas, application processes, and tools for accurate replication.

Maintenance & Repairs:

Provide on-set touch-ups, repairs, or alterations as needed.

Collaboration:

Work closely with departments like Puppet Lead and Costume Lead to ensure painted elements meet artistic and practical standards.

Workspace Maintenance:

Maintain a clean workspace, manage paint, brush, and supply inventory, and communicate material needs proactively.

Mentorship:

Guide and mentor junior team members, fostering skills in various painting techniques.

Flexible Scheduling:

Be available for extended hours as needed to support production. Qualifications 10+ years of experience in puppet, miniature, or model painting, ideally in the film or television industry. Expertise in a variety of painting techniques, including silicone painting, airbrushing, and fabric painting. Experience with painting models, props, and complex surfaces. Strong ability to match colors accurately and replicate intricate details. Problem-solving skills with adaptability to meet tight production deadlines. Effective time management to meet production schedules. Ability to maintain detailed documentation for processes and materials. Demonstrated leadership and collaborative skills, with experience mentoring junior team members.
