Position:
The NC Zoo is seeking an enthusiastic team member to join the Maintenance Department who enjoys rejuvenating bare and coated surfaces to a fresh new look. This is a full time position. This position will assit our Lead Painter with all painting projects .This position properly prepares metal, wood, and other surfaces and then applies various coatings for lasting environmental protection to meet USDA and Aquarium & Zoo accreditation standards as well as its aesthetic value to enhance the visitor experience. m.. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: This position is required to assist the team lead on all painting projects.
Identification of existing paint/coating if applicable, adherence issues, and base materials.
Proper surface repairs prior to the application of paints/coatings including sheetrock repair, minor woodworking/carpentry, minor metalworking, body filler, wood filler, etc.
Proper surface preparation to receive paint/coatings including pressure washing, sanding, scraping, wire brushing, blasting, stripping, surface pitting with mild acids, and caulking.
Requires attention to detail to produce crisp, clean edges, even coats, and well-adhered layers.
Research and identification of the best paint/coating and the best method of application for each job.
Complete requisitions to order needed materials for projects.
Perform journey level application of paints/coatings.
Self-starter who will take ownership of the Zoo’s painting projects and identify work that needs to be done.
Perform other maintenance duties as assigned.
Position/Physical Requirements:
Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
Must be able to regularly and safely: lift up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally; bend, stoop, and work in tight spaces; climb stairs and ladders; move over and about all types of equipment to inspect, analyze and perform repairs; stand for the majority of the day; endure extended outdoor field conditions at any time of the year; negotiate uneven outdoor terrain on foot; hear and respond to radio communication; and drive motor vehicles at day and at night Must be able to work on ladders, scaffolds, at heights, and below grade.
Must be able to work in confined spaces.
Requires manual dexterity, strength and ergonomic skills, and a strong sense of balance.
Must have very good visual acuity and color perception.
Must be able to pass a pre-employment screen conducted by assigned provider.

Demonstrated experience on the proper selection of coatings, surface materials, brushes and rollers.
Experience with airless and pneumatic spray equipment.
