Analyze system data, inspect components, diagnose problems, and repair or replace faulty parts to ensure the efficient functioning of the system. They may also monitor system operations, upgrade systems, and train users on the controls system. Role Purpose The purpose of a Controls Technician is to install, maintain, and repair electrical control systems and components in industrial settings. This role involves inspecting, testing, and troubleshooting a variety of electrical equipment and components, such as sensors, motors, controllers, switches, relays, and circuit boards. The Controls Technician also ensures that the systems are operating properly and safely, and that all safety protocols are being followed. They may also monitor and adjust system parameters to ensure that the systems are running efficiently. Controls Technician Summary Controls Technician must understand how speed, pressure, flow, level and temperature affect control systems. Controls Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing automated control systems, including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), and Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs). The Controls Technician works closely with the engineering team to ensure that all systems are functioning correctly. They must be familiar with various communication protocols, such as Ethernet, IO-Link, and Modbus bus. The Controls Technician must also have strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, as they are often required to diagnose and repair complex systems. Other duties may include creating technical drawings, participating in the design process, and providing technical support to other departments. Controls Technician Duties Maintain and repair control systems, instruments, and related equipment Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair malfunctions of control systems, instruments, and related equipment Perform preventive maintenance on control systems and related equipment Test control systems, instruments, and related equipment Install control systems and related equipment Calibrate and adjust control systems and related equipment Evaluate customer needs and recommend appropriate control systems and related equipment Provide maintenance and repair records Keep current on industry trends and technology

  • Controls Technician Skills Installing and maintaining electrical control systems Troubleshooting and repair of electrical control systems Upgrading existing control systems Testing and calibrating control systems Reading and understanding electrical schematics
  • Controls Technician Requirements Must have a high school diploma or equivalent Knowledge of electrical and electronic systems At least 2 years of experience in Programmable logic controllers software – Allen Bradley, Siemens, or Beckhoff control systems Knowledge of safety and operational procedures Ability to configure instruments and devices with the aid of software Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair problems Ability to read and understand technical manuals, schematics and drawings Ability to use hand and power tools Ability to lift and move heavy objects • Personal Traits Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and attention to detail Ability to work independently or as part of a team Knowledge of system engineering and computer systems
