Position(S): Apprentice Socratic Guides (similar to a mentor, storyteller, game-maker, and coach) The Apprentice Guide will work with our Directors and Lead Guides to: Support the Learners in creating meaningful exhibitions, ceremonies, and celebrations that reinforce the rules of engagement, and personal and group covenants to provide and strengthen a safe learning community. Empower and Affirm Learners, holding them accountable to their promises and to their commitment to delivering “the best work they can do” as they discover and pursue a calling on a Hero’s Journey. Act as a role model as an independent learner on a Hero’s Journey. Launch and lead Socratic (question-driven) group discussions. Co-create and launch Quests (projects), including developing daily challenges and curating world-class examples. Support Learners on their journey to cultivate a positive, beautiful, orderly, and inspiring studio (classroom) environment. Support Learners as they set up systems and develop skills in setting goals, tracking their progress, and creating portfolios of their work to show peers, parents, and future employers what they can do. Pass along each of these responsibilities to the learners as quickly as possible, to develop and encourage learners to lead themselves. Practice the Socratic method at all times (i.e., instead of answering questions, challenge using the Socratic method for learners to find the answers themselves). Research, find, and schedule guest speakers, plan field trips, and organize events and celebrations. Though most of the learning design/curriculum will be set already, the guide will help set and create daily/weekly/yearly planning as well as evaluate and refine the existing learning design/curriculum and design and experiment with new projects, tools, and approaches.

Base Qualifications:

Experience or education in alternative education, child psychology, or a related field is a plus. Loves to work with adolescents. Ideal for those with experience as a Nanny, Youth Counselor, or Coach Has proven excellence and references in guiding children in or out of a school environment. Extra consideration and increased compensation for international experience, entrepreneurial experience, previous Socratic or Montessori training, summer camp counselors or education or experience in STEM fields, Maker, Tinkerer, or Design.

Salary:

Apollo Academy runs an 11-month program between Sept – July. Guides spend the month of August prepping for the year and setting up the space. We run on 4-6 week sessions with 1-2 week breaks in between sessions, during which Guides are expected to balance time off with in-service days for planning and preparing for the next session. Paid training starts immediately. Apollo Academy offers a competitive salary depending on experience, education, and leadership ability, plus bonus potential based on performance and written quantitative feedback. The position offers opportunities for professional development, growth, and advancement. Starting at $19 – $24/hour with potential for quick growth based on performance, PTO, and additional benefits. Partial or Full work trade for Student Scholarships is also available. Guide training requirements are directed by the School Director and evolve along with the Guide to encourage continued growth and development toward becoming a Master Socratic Guide.
