Full Job Description Primary Function:
Under either general or direct supervision, Assistant Compounders support the Compounding function through various processes that include the weighing, handling, charging materials, cleaning equipment, transferring batches and other tasks assigned by management. The daily activities within the department will include equipment set-up, equipment cleaning/sanitation, material handling, compounding, cleaning, documentation, and other operations as assigned.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the compounding and mixing of ingestible bulk products. Perform other required departmental duties as required, i.e., cleaning, sanitization, etc.
- Following set Manufacturing Instructions, SOP’s and GMP’s, assists compounders in tending mixing Machines, pumps etc. that mix, compound and mill raw materials used in the manufacture of ingestible products.
- Assists in weighing out liquid or solid (ingestible) raw ingredients on manual scales, according to formula.
- Transfers completed batches into proper containers for movement to other production departments (Filling room).
- Proactively questions anomalies and utilizes opportunity for additional understanding of problem resolution.
- Extracts bulk samples for laboratory analysis. May assist in the handling, dispensing, and sampling of hazardous raw materials.
- Assists in the daily cleaning/sanitization of mixers, pumps, utensils and compounding rooms.
- Performs daily environmental monitoring according to schedule and SOP.
- May assist in the weighing/mixing of sanitizing agents.
- Completes required batch documentation records.
- Assembles and disassembles mixers, extruders, press machines, Sifters, pumps, etc.
- Adheres to all applicable procedures, cGMP’s, company policies, and all other quality or regulatory requirements (OSHA, DEA, FDA, EMEA, ANVISA, HS&E, etc.). Ensures all work is performed in a safe, effective manner, and in compliance with the appropriate industry and regulatory (FDA, DEA, OSHA) standards, and Departmental, Plant, and corporate quality and Behavioral Based Safety (BBS) goals.
- Prepare and mix ingredients according to precise formulas and recipes to create animal health products, such as medications, supplements, or nutritional additives.
- Ensure accurate measurement and weighing of ingredients, following specific guidelines and protocols to maintain product consistency and quality.
- Operate and maintain compound equipment and machinery, ensuring proper cleaning, calibration, and maintenance to meet regulatory requirements and prevent cross-contamination.
- Monitor and control temperature, pressure, and speed settings during the compounding process to guarantee optimal product integrity and efficacy.
- Implement and adhere to strict food safety regulations and pharmaceutical industry standards, such as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Follow all safety protocols and guidelines, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper handling of hazardous materials.
- Conduct routine equipment inspections and perform necessary adjustments or repairs, promptly reporting any issues or malfunctions to the appropriate personnel.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of ingredients used, batch numbers, production quantities, and any other required documentation as per regulatory standards.
- Collaborate with other team members, such as quality control technicians and pharmacists, to ensure compliance with product specifications and quality standards.
- Participate in training programs and stay updated on industry trends, new regulations, and best practices related to food safety, pharmaceutical compounding, and animal health products.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting process enhancements, optimizing workflows, and implementing quality control measures.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

Skills & Knowledge Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional education or training in pharmacy, food science, or a related field is preferred.
- Basic math skills and ability to read and write legibly on FDA regulated documentation.
- Proven experience as a Compounder or in a similar role, preferably in a pharmaceutical manufacturing setting for animal health products.
- Strong knowledge of food safety regulations, pharmaceutical industry standards (e.g., GMP, cGMP), and compounding methodologies.
- Familiarity with handling and compounding pharmaceutical ingredients, including active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), excipients, and other raw materials.
- Ability to accurately measure and weigh ingredients using precise laboratory equipment and instruments.
- Proficient in operating and troubleshooting compounder equipment specific to pharmaceutical compounding.
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail and meeting production targets.
- Physical stamina and ability to lift heavy objects and stand for long periods.
