Job Description
Public Works Highway Transfer Station Operator/ Attendant Town of East Lyme Public Works Dept 8 Capitol Drive, East Lyme, CT 06333 •Job Summary• We are seeking a dedicated and reliable Transfer Station Operator / Scale Attendant to join our municipal team. The ideal candidate will be dependable, safety-conscious, and eager to contribute to the smooth and efficient operation of our Transfer Station Nature of Work The Transfer Station Operator works at the Town’s Transfer Station Tuesday through Saturday. This position requires independent judgment, initiative, maturity, observation, communication skills, and accuracy.
Supervision Received:
Reports to the Transfer Station Supervisor, Sanitation Foreman, General Foreman, and Highway Superintendent in that order.
Exercised:
This position does not include supervisory responsibilities. Essential Job Functions Operate heavy equipment for handling bulky waste, recycling, leaf composting, and general transfer station duties. Perform routine safety checks of equipment before and after use. Assist the Transfer Station Supervisor in coordinating recycling activities with outside vendors, SCRRRA, and internal departments.
Operate the scale house:
greet the public, direct traffic, and ensure proper disposal procedures. Use computer systems for scale operations, database maintenance, and billing. Operate dump trucks and heavy equipment with plow attachments for snow and ice control on roads, parking lots, and facilities. Maintain accurate work, time, and material records. Perform duties of lower-grade Maintainers as needed. Respond to off-duty emergency calls and participate in snow removal operations. Work a flexible schedule, including regular Saturdays , unless scheduled off per the UPSEU contract. Maintain regular and reliable attendance. General Responsibilities Monitor and weigh incoming and outgoing vehicles at the scale house. Maintain cleanliness and organization of the transfer station and surrounding areas. Conduct routine inspections and basic maintenance of equipment and facilities. Enforce safety protocols and ensure compliance with environmental and operational standards. Assist with traffic control and customer inquiries in a courteous and professional manner. Accurately record and report data for billing and regulatory purposes. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Experience in waste management, public works, or a related field preferred. Basic computer skills and familiarity with scale software systems. Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures. Excellent communication and customer service skills. Ability to perform manual labor and work in various weather conditions.
