Job Description
Central Utility Plant Operator – Second Class Fireman 2.8 2.8 out of 5 stars Waltham, MA 02451 The Central Utility Plant Operator is responsible for the operations and maintenance of the central utility plant under the supervision of the Central Utility Plant (CUP) Chief Engineer and/or Facilities Maintenance Organization (FMO) Chief Engineer. The role requires a strong proficiency in integrated industrial facility operation and power and steam plant knowledge. This position necessitates the ability to work in a cohesive team environment, ensuring 100% uninterrupted utilities to an R D Building.
Job Responsibilities:
Operate and maintain high pressure boilers, chillers, generators, air compressors, and cooling towers. Carry out preventative and corrective maintenance in accordance with site policy and procedures. Conduct water chemistry sampling, analysis, and treatment in accordance with applicable procedures. Maintain comprehensive records of all equipment in accordance with site, federal, state, and local codes and requirements. Oversee the work of subcontractors in accordance with site policy. Process administrative paperwork in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. Adhere to and participate in site/company safety & training programs. Participate in regular required communication with Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer, management, tenants, and other staff. Work nights, weekends, holidays, and provide coverage for vacation-related overtime requests. Completes work in accordance with UG2’s Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions. Requirements (Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Education and/or Experience): Hold a current MA 2nd fireman license or above issued by dept of fire services. Proficiency in water chemistry sampling, analysis, and treatment for boilers, cooling towers, and chillers, or ability to learn quickly. Bachelor’s degree in Facilities/Marine/Power Systems Engineering desired, but integrated industrial facility operation/power & steam plant knowledge or experience is mandatory. Knowledge and experience with industrial piping/plumbing, high-pressure boiler operation, chiller plant operation, HVAC, instrumentation & controls, power generation, and electrical troubleshooting. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, work orders, technical manuals. Proficient computer skills using Microsoft Office Products and building automation systems (Johnson Controls Metasys desired). Physical ability to lift at least 50 pounds, remain stationary for extended periods, and navigate multiple sets of stairs and ladders.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior military experience in specialized schools like USN Nuclear Program, Engineman, Machinist Mate, USCG Machinery Technician or Damage Controlman, or apprenticeship program experience in boiler operations. Demonstrates attention to detail and problem-solving abilities. Strong customer service skills, communication skills, efficiency, and organization. Adapts to changes in the work environment, manages competing demands, and deals with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events. Physical Requirements Physical Demands:
The role requires the ability to perform physical labor related to central utility plant operation and maintenance. The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate to loud. Potential frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock. Occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; and outside weather conditions.
