05/13/2025 The Rockland County Sewer District No. 1 is seeking a candidate for the position of Shift Operator. The position includes technical work involving responsibility during the absence of the Supervising Operator or Chief Operator, or while assigned to a specific shift, for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of a Grade 4 wastewater treatment plant•. The work is performed under the general direction of a Supervising or Chief Operator and work guidance (e.g. lead work) may be provided to others. Incumbents in this title may be required to work other-than regularly scheduled work hours and may be required to remain on duty to maintain minimum staffing levels on the following shift. Does related work as required.
Job description:
Operates pumps, motors, air compressors and related machinery and equipment; Makes minor repairs to machinery and equipment; Records readings from meters and gauges; Operates odor control system, generators, sludge dewatering process, chlorination; Prepares work requests for maintenance, repair or replacement of equipment; Ensures plant security and the functioning of all equipment by performing periodic inspection of the facility and resolves problems, as necessary; Maintains a log of plant operations and related records, and reviews inputted operational data; Takes samples of sewage, and performs testing of sewage samples; Provides work guidance and basic training to employees involved in related plant operation activities; May respond to public inquiries or complaints.
Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics:
Good knowledge of the practices used and equipment required in the operation and maintenance of a grade 4 wastewater treatment plant
- ; working knowledge of the principles and applications of physics, chemistry and bacteriology as applied to sewage treatment disposal; ability to operate and repair pumps, valves and related mechanical and electrical equipment; ability to read, understand and record data from gauges, scales and meters; ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for control of plant operation; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to perform basic mechanical procedures; ability to use computer software applicable to plant operations and maintenance•.
Minimum Qualifications :
Possession of a valid Grade 3 (Wastewater) certificate issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Certification qualifications shall consist of education, training and practical experience as defined in Part 650 of the Department of Environmental Conservation Regulations.
Special Requirements and Information :
: Possession of a valid driver’s license appropriate to the kind and size of vehicle to be driven. Must maintain the Grade 3 (Wastewater) certificate throughout the course of employment in this title. Residency in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut is a requirement for this position. Civil service examination requirements have been waived for this position. Candidates must only meet the minimum qualifications for consideration. Pre-employment medical examination and medical clearance for the use of respiratory equipment.
