Journey to the Ultimate Face-Off (working title)

Project Type:

Passion Project | Ultra Low Budget | Docu-Series on Journey of a Black Hockey Player (currently 11 years old) and a Single Black Mother

  • This documentary series follows the inspiring journey of a talented, hard-working, and dedicated young Black hockey player, his team, and his circle and a single Black mother navigating the hockey world.

A story unique to the hockey world, blending real-life sport, family, and culture.

Project Description:

This docu-series centers on my son, a rising hockey player who went from barely skating to making a 12U AA team in just 13 months (2 of those months he didn’t skate for Summer break, so really 11 months), an incredible progression in a sport where very few Black kids participate. The series will also feature his older friends, including sons of former NHL players and prospects drafted into OHL/AHL, plus his elite skills and skate private coaches who have worked with NHL stars like Connor McDavid, and pro roller hockey players. The coach for the 12U team he is on this coming season is former NHL player Petr Schastlivy. This docu-series will not just show my son’s journey and the sport, but also my perspective as a single Black mother navigating the demanding hockey world while I train Cason (off ice), manage finances, and face the challenges and struggles that come with being the minority single mom in a very competitive and often exclusive environment. It will also show the amazing support we receive from the hockey mom community as well. This is the first and only docu-series of its kind, aimed at engaging hockey fans, families, and anyone inspired by stories of perseverance and culture in sports. This type of docu-series has never been done before. Many filmmakers say this about their projects and it’s not accurate, but in this case, the facts and truth show that this is the first hockey docu-series of it’s kind. Season 1 is planned for distribution on Amazon Prime Video and multiple streaming platforms (secured through a reputable distribution company with prior successful placements on 16 streaming platforms). The first episode will be released October 2025 (4 months from now). I’ll heavily market the series to build buzz within the hockey and broader community during and after production.
