JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Context The strategy is to run the manufacturing facility under a team approach utilizing the skills and experience of the entire Management Team, keeping the company in a strong, competitive market position, producing high quality products at the best possible efficiency. Job Accountabilities (in order of importance) To work closely with employees and Plant Supervisors to ensure operating efficiency and maximum utilization of the plant labour force. Maintain a safe and healthy work environment by complying with all applicable regulations and legislation and promoting company health and safety rules. Create and maintain harmonious relations between the Union and Management. Coordinate communication and employee involvement to ensure cohesive results between production, quality, maintenance, sales and shipping. Participate and help achieve both company and plant supervisory team goals. Assist in supervising the production facility to ensure production requirements are met. Train and motivate employees where applicable. Recruit and maintain workforce as per budget requirements. Supply production reports, quality reports and production information and analysis as requested. Review and update ShopLogix program, as required, and produce reports. Participate in ShopLogix initiatives and implement new projects. Ensure timely shift reporting and reporting accuracy. Complete production summaries as per Plant Manager’s instruction. Assist with production scheduling in IPC. Review, approve and update ADF forms for system input and/or costing. Act as backup for BOM entry to QAD. Help maintain DIO to acceptable levels. Maintain inventory to proper levels to meet production requirements. Become familiar with other Production Supervisors’ functions. Help coordinate production between shifts. Help coordinate and supervise inventories. Ensure cycle inventories are completed. Help implement changes as recommended by management. Assist with scheduling hourly vacations. Update and post pertaining KPIs. Other duties as assigned. Decision Making (Decisions you make without reference to your manager) This position entails making day-to-day decisions without reference to superiors. Recommendations involving procedural change are discussed with peers and supervisors for approval and implementation. Other Responsibilities Empower employees to take responsibility for their work. Encourage employees to work together towards increasing plant efficiency. Empower lead hands to take responsibility for their work areas and meet production goals. Treat all employees equally and fairly. Be familiar with all aspects of the collective agreement and company rules. Assist handling union employee’s complaints and grievances in a positive manner. Participate in solving all labour relations problems on an ongoing basis to ensure harmony amongst workers. Distribute all pertinent records to appropriate union and management personnel. Become familiar with drum making machinery and equipment to the point where instruction and advice can be given to employees concerning safety and proper use. Encourage employees to participate in quality programs and to become active participants in Continuous Improvement Programs. Become familiar with all aspects of our Quality System, ISO 9001-2000 and other related quality systems (i.e. MPS). Respond to and help investigate customer complaints. Coordinate with Production Supervisors’ and Lead Hands in order to meet production requirements and to minimize downtime and overtime. Coordinate smooth transition between shifts. Actively coordinate plant production capabilities with sales order desk. Relay production information to order desk. Report all maintenance related problems to Plant Manager and/or Maintenance Manager. Participate in daily production meetings. Promote safe work practices. Become familiar with the Health and Safety Act. Supply the tools necessary for employees to work efficiently and correctly. Keep employees informed of production objectives and goals. Ensure all plant procedures are being followed and advise which area procedures need revision or review. Make recommendations to reduce labour costs. Ensure continuity of production through increased flexibility of workforce. Arrange labour requirements to satisfy each day’s production. Make day-to-day decisions and take action as required to ensure cost effective production. Implement job training as required. Determine an employee’s need for training and how to best satisfy those needs. Be aware of and act on employees’ complaints or suggestions. Sustain good general housekeeping procedures inside and outside of the plant. Ensure employees are collecting specific job-related data as required. Set up inventory system that can be controlled and monitored accurately. Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience A minimum of 5 years manufacturing experience. College education with grade 12 equivalent or higher. Excellent organizational, planning and leadership skills. Persuasive negotiation skills. Computer and software systems proficiency. Bilingual English / Spanish ideal.
