Description of Work
Internal Posting – Only temporary or permanent North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) employees in a temporary full-time, temporary part-time, permanent full-time, permanent part-time, probationary, trainee, or time-limited position or a layoff candidate with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by General Statute (GS) 126 (State Personnel Act) may apply.
Employee serves as the lead worker for the Herbicide crew in Shelby, within the Division 12 Roadside Environmental Unit. The position works on a crew performing herbicide applications and planting wildflower beds. Work involves assisting in spraying operations, operation of a spray truck, attenuator truck, and advanced warning arrow board trucks. Operation of hand and power tools such as chainsaws, augers, trimmers, etc. Spraying operation requires basic knowledge of mixing and applying chemicals according to the label. Herbicide responsibilities include implementation of an Integrated Pest Management Program, consisting of the following programs: Warm Season Turf Species Release, Plant Growth Regulators, Broadleaf Weed Control, Brush Control- Foliar and Dormant Stem, Stationary Object Control, Paved
Shoulder Treatment, Capped Island Treatments, Noxious Weed Control, Annual Grass Control, Stump treatments, etc. Wildflower responsibilities include Preparing, sowing, spraying, and fertilizing of plant beds. Position assists in daily data collection of herbicide application rates and routes applied. Position will assist in the completion of daily spray reports, keeping up with inventory, completing time sheets when the supervisor is out, leading tailgate safety meets and filling out ORM books and pre-trip inspections. When needed, will work with seed crews and plant maintenance crew to accomplish Roadside Environmental functions. When needed, position may inspect various contracted landscaping projects. Routine maintenance and special projects required at Rest Areas as needed. This position will also perform snow and ice removal and emergency storm response. Must possess NC Pesticide Applicator license with Ornamental and Turf and Right of Way categories.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
Experience in correctly applying herbicides and pesticides in accordance with the label, as well as proper storage and disposal techniques.
Experience in installing and maintaining wildflower beds & other landscape plantings.
Experience leading and training subordinates and directing the daily activities of a work crew.
Working knowledge of NCDOT Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.

Additional Expectations:

Must operate a Class A motor vehicle and/or perform flagging operation to safely guide traffic through work zones; receive and give effective communications; perform manual labor for extended periods of time; operate equipment that vibrates; perform essential functions in extreme hot and/or cold weather; traverse uneven terrain; repetitively lift 50 lbs. Safety-toe shoes are required. Drug testing is required. Ability to obtain CDL Class “A” driver’s license and tanker endorsement with a 60-day grace period to obtain a CDL Permit and 90 days to obtain a License. Preference given to applicants who possess commercial driver license/permit. As a condition of employment, a release of form (ALCDGR-01) and a back-ground statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past 2 years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development Diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
