Full Job Description Position:
Furniture & Product Designer•
Full Time Location:
New Lab, Brooklyn Navy Yard (On-Site) About Jumbo Jumbo is a Brooklyn-based design practice dedicated to the design and production of sensational objects and environments. Our projects are guided by an ongoing interest in reductivism and whimsy. As a result, our work is both technical in execution and joyful in approach. Our work spans across categories, but always centers on form, and the emotional power of physical objects. We prototype, we model, we sketch, we build, and we obsess over every curve and surface until it feels just right. To learn more about our practice and design philosophy, visit our website: jumbo.nyc The Role We’re looking for a full-time Furniture and Product Designer to join us at our small studio at New Lab in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. This is a hands-on role for a designer who thrives on both concept development and physical making. You’ll be part of every step in the process—from early ideations and concept creation to CAD modeling and prototyping to manufacturing. The ideal candidate brings not only strong technical skills, but also a sense of humor, curiosity, and care. Requirements We’re looking for someone who is ready to jump in and contribute from day one.
You should have:
Strong ideation and concept development skills
- You’re comfortable generating original ideas, developing them into clear proposals, and presenting them with confidence and clarity. Strong sketching and drawing skills
- You can quickly communicate ideas through freehand sketches, diagrams, and drawings during the design process. Fluency in CAD and rendering software
- You’re efficient with tools like Rhino, SolidWorks, Fusion, KeyShot, Blender, or similar. This is not a training position—we expect you to model and render independently and quickly. Project coordination and time management skills
- We’re a small studio, so you’ll need to take initiative, stay organized, and help move projects forward without much hand-holding. Proficiency in shop tools and equipment
- You know your way around wood, metal, and plastic fabrication tools, and can confidently build functional, accurate prototypes. Hands-on prototyping experience with tools
- You’re comfortable using 3D printers, resin printers, CNC, and other prototyping methods—or at least able to figure them out quickly as needed. A flexible, self-directed mindset
- Each project is different.
You should be a quick learner who adapts easily and enjoys experimenting with new tools, materials, and approaches. Responsibilities As a core member of the studio, you’ll be expected to: Take design concepts from ideation through development and final presentation Collaborate with the team to shape and refine the studio’s creative direction Own the physical prototyping process—planning timelines, sourcing materials, coordinating fabrication, and maintaining momentum Present your ideas clearly, both internally and externally, using compelling visual and verbal storytelling Contribute to the studio’s evolving workflows, including how we document and archive our work Stay up to date on design trends, technologies, and fabrication methods relevant to furniture and object design Research and experiment with artificial intelligence tools relevant to design, prototyping, and creative workflows—we’re actively exploring how AI can enhance our practice and expect you to be part of that process
