The Horticultural Quality Control Manager is responsible for overseeing the quality of plant materials and horticultural practices across all landscape construction and maintenance projects. This role ensures that plantings meet aesthetic, healthy, and up to contractual standards, while also maintaining the long-term success and sustainability of the installed landscapes. The role works closely with project managers, crews, subcontractors, and clients to uphold best practices in horticulture, safety, and site cleanliness.

Key Responsibilities:

Quality Oversight & Inspection Inspect installed plant materials for health, placement accuracy, and overall quality during and after installation. Monitor maintenance sites to ensure proper horticultural practices (pruning, fertilization, irrigation, IPM, etc.) are followed. Verify that landscape installations comply with project specifications, design intent, and contractual standards. Assist with locating plan materials and checking that plant materials meet our standards prior to purchase. Project Support Collaborate with construction and maintenance supervisors to address plant performance issues and site-specific horticultural challenges. Conduct pre-installation reviews and post-installation evaluations to ensure quality from start to finish. Provide on-site guidance to crews regarding planting methods, soil preparation, and aftercare. Plant Health & Sustainability Identify plant health problems and recommend or implement corrective actions (e.g., pest management, soil amendments). Ensure proper irrigation, mulching, staking, and seasonal care practices are followed. Lead efforts to reduce plant losses and rework across projects. Training & Development Train crews on proper horticultural techniques, plant handling, and maintenance best practices. Support continuing education on plant ID, care requirements, and seasonal considerations. Client & Team Communication Serve as a horticultural expert in client meetings, walkthroughs, and quality-related discussions. Communicate quality findings and improvement plans to internal teams. Documentation & Reporting Maintain quality checklists, inspection records, and photo documentation for job sites. Track warranty plant performance and coordinate replacements as needed.

Qualifications:

Degree or diploma in Horticulture, Landscape Management, or related field (or equivalent experience). 5+ years of experience in landscape installation and maintenance, with a focus on plant quality and care. Strong knowledge of regional plant material, soil types, irrigation systems, and maintenance practices. The ability to identify plant species, pests, diseases, and site conditions affecting plant health. Effective communication and leadership skills. Proficiency with landscape plans, specifications, and project documentation. Current Drivers License.

Preferred Skills:

Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus. Familiarity with landscape management software or digital inspection tools. Knowledge of safety regulations, horticultural certifications, or LEED/sustainable landscape practices.

Working Conditions:

Regular visits to job sites (active construction and ongoing maintenance). Work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Requires walking, standing, bending, and lifting plant material or tools.
