Description of Work The Fuel Quality Section of the Standards Division in the N.C. Dept. of Agriculture & Consumer Service is the regulatory agent in the state responsible for enforcing motor fuel (gasoline and diesel), heating fuel (kerosene and fuel oil) and motor oil quality standards. Inspections are primarily of those products available for sale to the public, but also can include those used in business, commercial or private applications. The section also responds to consumer complaints or industry requests concerning fuel quality. Duties involve performing standardized laboratory tests and analysis of motor fuel (gasoline, diesel, kerosene) quality at retail and other locations, enforcing laws and regulations concerning fuel quality, collecting motor fuel and oil samples for the central lab and investigating consumer complaints. This position operates under the general guidance of the unit supervisor and is responsible for planning their own daily work schedule to meet performance goals. The outdoor nature of this work will require that the employee conduct testing in a wide variety of environmental conditions as the seasons change throughout the year. A mobile lab truck to carry out these duties is provided at the employer’s expense. Ability to work independently and follow standard operating procedures.
Ability to interpret testing results to make regulatory decisions. Ability to express technical information clearly, both orally and in writing, to a diverse array of internal and external stakeholders. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both. Associate’s degree in one of the chemical, biological, microbiological, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum including related chemistry laboratory coursework from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
