Job Description

Section Material Technician State of North Carolina – Dept of Transportation Moore County, NC Description of Work This position serves as a Materials and Tests Unit’s Section Materials Technician that covers Division 3. The Section Materials Technician is responsible for sampling, testing, and inspecting materials on highway construction projects throughout the assigned Division in order to assure that they meet prescribed standards and specifications. This position is also responsible for performing assessments of producer/contractor technicians to ensure that they are performing quality control and acceptance testing properly according to prescribed standards and specifications. It provides instruction in the Department’s certification programs. This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits, competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Demonstrated ability to assess testing proficiency of technicians to ensure compliance with established testing methods. Experience evaluating and reviewing inspectors’ reports related to compliance with specifications. Experience working in close quarters with restricted movement, climbing bridge substructures, and/or working over water or over and around high volumes of traffic. Experience using computers and various computer software on a regular basis.

Additional Expectations:

Management prefers applicants with knowledge, experience and certification in sampling and testing asphalt, aggregate, concrete and soils materials used in highway construction. Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge and experience with HiCAMS database. Ability to safely navigate hazardous work situations at highway construction projects and material/product stockpiles while following established in-house safety procedures. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
