16th Avenue South, Tampa, FL 33619 POSITION SUMMARY Sewing machine operators are highly skilled in sewing, responsible for excellent quality and a high standard of materials produced. The Sewing machine operator sets up and operates single, double, or multiple sewing machines to sew and cut mattress panels to specifications as designed by customer orders. Employee must be able to comprehend verbal instructions and communicate with coworkers, supervisors, and management clearly with dignity and respect.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Sew mattress covers with proper seam allowance.
  • Set aside sewn covers in proper bins, ensuring like covers are stored together.
  • Provides consistent flow of materials to the build table without interruption.
  • Prepares and organizes components for final assembly and restocks raw materials at point of use.
  • Inspects units and finished units for unacceptable flaws or structural defects.
  • May move mattress materials/components between floor, pallets, conveyors and/or tables.
  • May also need to operate various machines, such as sewing machines, quilting machines, border surge and embroidery.
  • May be responsible for layering mattress components on a table in the correct order.
  • Check units to be sewn for damage. Clean stains or set aside for repair.
  • May be responsible for ensuring production materials are sorted, verified, and supplied to appropriate workstations or staging areas, as required to meet production schedule.
  • Complies with quality and continuous improvement requirements and procedures.
  • Complies with established safety regulations and maintains workstation in a neat, clean, and orderly fashion.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

ABILITIES

)

  • Experience operating industrial sewing machines and knowledge of sewing techniques.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, including people skills. Manual dexterity required for operating machinery. Ability to be a team player and meet deadlines.
  • Must be physically able to perform efficiently all duties of the position with, or without reasonable accommodation for a 10-hours shift.

Duties require lifting, carrying, prolonged standing, walking, pushing, bending, and reaching, and may involve the handling of up to 50 pounds.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or GED preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 1-2 years of related experience working in similar industry; additional education may be substituted for years of work experience.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with employees.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively in a tactful and courteous manner with employees, supervisors, and managers.

  • Ability to verbalize understanding of a problem or situation, ask relevant questions for clarification, and explain it to others.
  • Follow instructions or work orders; and/or read routine sentences, instructions, regulations, or procedures; complete routine job forms and incident reports; and/or communicate routine information regarding daily activities.

Industrial Sewing machines, Hand-held power equipment, tools and/or light machinery.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Prolonged periods working on feet, using tools, and performing repetitive actions that entail frequent bending and stooping.
  • The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand; and required to walk, stoop, kneel or crouch.
  • The employee in the Sew Department must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • The employee in the Quilt Department must frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, utilizing a two-man lift.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
