Seasonal Boiler Operator | 2nd Shift Newark Housing Authority – 3.6 Newark, NJ Job Details Seasonal $20 an hour 1 day ago Qualifications Mid-level Driver’s License Boiler License Full Job Description Under direction, operates and makes minor repairs to stationary steam boilers or steam generators and auxiliary boiler equipment serving: (1) a building of public assembly and having the safety valve set at fifteen pounds per square inch gauge or less and having 499 square feet of heating surface or (2) having safety valves set higher than fifteen pounds per square inch gauge and rated over six boiler horsepower but not over 500 boiler horsepower or (3) having safety valves set higher than fifteen pounds per square inch gauge and rated over 500 boiler horsepower but not over 1,000 boiler horsepower on a shift under the general supervision of a properly licensed engineer or (4) having safety valves set higher than 15 pounds per square inch gauge and rated over 1,000 boiler horsepower on a shift under the immediate direction of, and responsible to, a properly licensed engineer in charge of the shift; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Fires stationary boilers used in generating power to supply steam to heating plants, turbines, and other steam powered equipment. Lubricate motors and equipment bearings. Manipulates valves to control the operation of feed pump governors and pressure control gauges. Check water levels and test the lwfco. Performs bottom blowdowns per shift. Maintains the fires in the boilers at the proper thickness and regulates the draft to obtain the most efficient results. Performs work involved in repair, maintenance, and installation of grate units, tubes, and caps, and in turbining boilers. Measures and records amounts of fuel used. Washes boiler and pump rooms and does other work to maintain the areas in a clean, change light bulbs, orderly, and safe condition. Makes emergency repairs and does the work required to keep the machines and equipment in good operating condition. Makes simple tests of boiler water to determine the amount of hardness, acidity, and alkalinity and may operate boiler water conditioning apparatus and equipment. Obtains, stores, safeguards, and properly uses equipment, materials, and supplies. Keeps essential records and files of the results of systematic readings of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, and steam flow. May operate and maintain air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. Sweeps and cleans furnace rooms, keeps flues clean, picks up trash adjacent to furnace rooms and places in containers, and keeps trash compounds clean at all times. Becomes familiar with the normal operations of blowers motors and regulators and reports promptly any that are not operating normally. Reports breakage of or damage to furnaces or heaters promptly. Notifies proper individuals if anyone in anyway interferes with the operation of the furnaces or heaters. Reports to the proper individual whenever the fuel supply is running low. Adjusts drafts, oils pumps, electric motors, and other boiler room equipment. When firing season terminates, sweeps, mops, scrubs, and paint the floors. Cleans walls and ceilings, change light bulbs, dusts and polishes furniture, polishes metal work, and cleans woodwork, windows, and lavatories. Makes minor repairs, cuts and trims grass and shrubbery, and acts as watchman. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a boiler operator’s license of the appropriate grade and type issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor. Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position. Ability to work nights and weekends as needed. Frequently must push, pull, move or lift up to 50lbs.
