OF TALLADEGA – CERTIFIED WASTEWATER TREATMENT OPERATOR III JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Supervisor, the employee operates wastewater treatment plant; responsible for the safe and efficient operation of chemical and plant controls and for routine plant maintenance activities. The employee ensures compliance with ADEM requirements and applies proper treatments to wastewater at specific stages of treatment. The employee monitors control panels, meters, and processing equipment, and makes adjustments as required. The employee maintains preventive maintenance programs on all equipment and plant facilities according to requirements; completes logs, reports, and documentation. The incumbent may act as a lead worker over an Operator Trainee and/or laboring personnel as assigned. This is shift work performing daily operation and maintenance duties at City wastewater treatment facility or site locations. Work is usually performed in accordance with well-defined procedures. This job classification is identified as safety-sensitive and is subject to a pre-employment background check and random drug screens.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION
Wastewater Plant Operations. Controls and monitors wastewater treatment plant processes and equipment operations per established procedures to ensure proper treatment of wastewater per federal/state regulations. Performs inspections of aeration basins. Monitors and maintains proper dissolved oxygen and food/microorganism ratio. Oversees and participates in digging out and raking drying beds and washing down clarifiers. Trains and instructs subordinates as assigned. Monitors chemical feeds for proper levels; adjusts feed rates. Monitors and inspects plant equipment and operations for safety, maintenance and proper process operations. Takes readings from assorted meters/gauges; reads, interprets and records a variety of data. Compiles chart data and records for reporting purposes. Maintains duty logs to document chemical levels and water quality. Prepares and/or completes forms, reports, logs, charts, or other documents; forwards or maintains. Maintains treatment plant filing system. Assists in preparing required ADEM reports. Recommends policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of quality services by the department. Incorporates continuous quality improvement principles in day-to-day activities. Coordinates and conducts plant tours for the general public.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION
Water Testing. Performs quality control tests to determine the composition of wastewater and to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations for turbidity, chlorine, fluoride, alkalinity, pH, alum, and hardness on both raw and finished water. Collects and analyzes wastewater samples and/or forwards same for laboratory testing to ensure compliance with ADEM guidelines. Tests concentration of solids and the concentration of sludge returned to the system for further treatment; makes adjustments. Collects wastewater samples for laboratory analysis; performs in-house testing of samples. Collects samples of raw water and processed water at various stages and tests for proper treatment. Performs regular checks of turbidity and pH of treated water and water being treated.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION
Wastewater Plant Maintenance. Performs plant maintenance on plant equipment and facilities to ensure wastewater operates to meet City needs. Troubleshoots equipment problems and makes minor repairs. Performs routine maintenance and repair of pumps, motors and equipment necessary for safe and efficient plant operation. Performs cleaning, repair, and preventive maintenance tasks to keep plant, machinery, equipment and tools in good working condition. Performs general housekeeping and cleaning duties as well as grounds maintenance. Tests and calibrates diagnostic instrumentation. Transfers/loads chemicals, bottled gases for deliver to other City plants. Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (

Possess a current and valid driver’s license and be insurable. Ability to maintain continuing education credits. Ability to work non-standard, shift work hours. Ability to be on-call. Ability to travel. Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and random drug screens. Physical Demands The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 lbs., crouching or crawling in restricted areas, and defending oneself or others from physical attack. Work Environment The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., working at great heights under extreme weather conditions, subject to physical attack or mob conditions, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
