The Wastewater Operator (or Trainee) is responsible for assisting in the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of the City of Sparta Wastewater Treatment Plant. This role ensures that the treatment process meets all federal and state regulations and supports the city’s environmental health.
Key Responsibilities:
Monitor, operate, repair, and adjust wastewater treatment equipment including pumps, motors, aerators, and other various equipment. Collect and analyze samples using proper lab techniques to ensure compliance with Georgia EPD permit requirements. Maintain accurate records of plant operations, test results, equipment performance, and maintenance. Perform daily inspections of plant equipment and facilities; report malfunctions and assist with maintenance and repairs. Maintain plant cleanliness and perform groundskeeping duties. Navigate and perform inspections or repairs from a boat on wastewater treatment ponds aerators and lines. Cut, trim, and maintain vegetation on sprayfields and treatment plant grounds using hand tools, chainsaws, mowers, and tractors. Remove trees, debris, or obstructions from ditches, access roads, and plant facilities as needed. Support other Utilities Department functions as assigned during emergencies or cross-training. Participate in after-hours emergency response as needed (on-call rotation may apply during periods of heavy rainfall).
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Mechanical or electrical aptitude and experience with pumps, valves, or electrical controls. Basic computer skills for logging data and completing online regulatory reports. Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently or as part of a team. Prior experience in a municipal, industrial, or utility setting is a plus.. Comfortably work around wildlife, insects, snakes, and other environmental hazards commonly found in rural settings.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors, including in wet, hot, cold, or hazardous environments. Exposure to raw sewage, chemicals, and loud equipment is routine. Ability to lift 50+ lbs, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces or elevated areas as needed. Outdoor work in wooded, wet, or uneven terrain with potential wildlife encounters. Use of PPE including gloves, respirators, and protective clothing as required.
Qualifications:
Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.) is required. Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment and maintain it as a condition of continued employment. Georgia Wastewater or Sewer Collections license is preferred but not required.
Special Requirements:
Must be available to respond to emergencies during off-hours as needed. Requires an acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check, and a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Requires satisfactory results from a pre-employment alcohol and controlled substance testing. This position is deemed safety-sensitive and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing.
