Major Duties and Responsibilities This position is responsible for supervising the operations in support of landfill activities. Planning, scheduling & conducting major earthmoving projects for Pine Grove Landfill.
Training new and existing personnel on how to properly operate landfill equipment.
Operating Landfill Heavy Equipment.
Conducting environmental compliance repairs, slope stabilization, and maintenance.
Establish and maintain a positive and professional working relationship with other divisions in order to utilize all City resources available.
Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of how weather and seasonal conditions may affect earthmoving project.
Knowledge of erosion and sedimentation.
Knowledge of landfill equipment.
Knowledge of production regarding earthmoving activities.
Knowledge of how to build slopes, berms, ditches, and roads.
Knowledge of how to compact trash to optimal density.
Knowledge of erosion and sedimentation.
Knowledge of various soils, rock, and hydrology.
Skill in clearing, grading, reading plans, building roads, loading, hauling, stockpiling, and land stabilization.
Skill in organization and planning.
Skill in communicating effectively.
Skill in the operation of landfill equipment such as a dozer, finishing dozer, compactor, backhoe, loader, tractor, excavator, grinder, haul truck, and all equipment associated with landfilling activities.
Skill in building a landfill to plan. Minimum Educational and Training Requirements Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for at least five years. This position is required to supervise state inmate labor. The employee must pass the Department of Corrections three-day certification within the time frame required by this department, which is normally six months but may be altered. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Must obtain Commercial Driver’s License within the first year of employment unless specified otherwise by the Waste Disposal Manager. The ability to obtain GA Landfill Operator Certification once employed may be required. The ability to obtain Blue Card for erosion and sedimentation also may be required. Physical Requirements The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color. Balancing
